Dogs as a fashion accessory

Mother of God, Empress of the Universe

There's a trend here in the more-pretentious parts of south Florida to tote a dog around like an accessory. I'm wondering if it's just due to brains-overcooked-in-the-sun coupled with excessive botox and cosmetic surgery, or if it's becoming the norm everywhere.

Initially I got a kick out of the outrageousness of it--these aren't normal mutty dogs, by any means. They're almost always small, white and fluffy, perfectly coiffed, manicured, perfumed, and dressed, sometimes in designer doggie clothes. No, I'm *not* exaggerating. The latest thing seems to be to carry them around in designer satchels or in made-for-doggie prams. If they're allowed to walk on the ground,(poor abused lil beasts) you'll often see them wearing booties.

I'm wondering what's going to happen to the dogs when the trend becomes passe. They can't just be stored in a spare closet like last season's shoes.

I think that's been going for a while amongst some smiley - weird section of the community. Certainly the UK comedy Absolutely Fabulous took the piss out of this a good number of years ago now.

I'm glad to hear this isn't just a tropical anomaly.

I'm wondering how things'll go here in the USA when one of these days someone's dog takes a chunk out of somebody else's body. Last week, while working, a woman cautioned me to stay away from her uncontained bull terrier, as it would 'protect' her if someone stepped too close. Then why the HELL did she bring it into the cosmetics department of a busy department store? What are these people thinking?

Dogs like that are supposed to be muzzled in the UK.

Not that that is reverently adhered to mind you but still...

Rich people seem to have had handbag dogs for years. Lion cut poodles and chihuahas.

Actually dogs, like people seem to get little person/dog syndrome.

The only dog I've ever been bitten by was a Chihuahua.

Mind you, I suppose that's better than having one' s throat torn out by a Pitbull...

For some reason, small dogs bark a lot more than normal-sized dogs. I haven't been bitten by one though, they seem quite cowardly. Runs and hides, and barks at you from under a chair.

I suggest you take a crash course in taxidermy and cabinet making, MoG.

And take out an ad in the paper:

'Is your pooch passe? Has your dog had its day? Yes, then stuff it! and keep it in its very own canine corpse kennel. And to remind you of past times we will even record its bark before we send it on its way. Ring Moggie to stuff your doggie.'

It is actually illegal to breed pitbulls in the UK, and has been for a few years now.

I'm waiting for the day that people start wearing tiny little dogs as jewellery.

Alfster, sometimes you display *such* poor taste! Love it!smiley - cheers

Bonsai kittens? ???? I think I missed something. Do tell.

So, the best-dressed doggie of the day was a maltese, pink feather hairpiece in a little pouf, pink neckkerchief with a pattern of tiny white bones, french manicure(hot-pink with white tips) and pink designer tote bag. The human mom was color co-ordinated to match her baby, except for the bandage protecting her recent nose job. Neither was vicious, in fact, both were very friendly.

Of course, when trend inevitably recycle in twenty years time one can get it out of the bottom of the wardrobe, give it a quick pick-me-up spray and hey presto, its time has come once more! smiley - biggrin

Then bring it on down to your local Chinese restaraunt and we'll prepare it just how you like it. Remember, a dog isn't just for Christmas, it's for dinner. smiley - dog

I'm not really here

"It is actually illegal to breed pitbulls in the UK"

A bull terrier is different to a pit bull.

I think I'll start bringing the camera to work. Great idea, Alfster! Meanwhile, I have only one pic in my files of a best-dressed doggie, but it's a doozie. I'll go create the album. smiley - cheers
