Who is Responsible for the 80s?
Is mise Duncan Posted Jun 30, 2000
I think the problem with the 80s was that no-one was responsible for anything - it all just sort of sprouted out of nothing.
The other thing about the 80s is that it is still in living memory - i.e. we can all remember the ghastly stuff that went on without it being fogged in nostalgia (as is the case with the 70s, 60s, 50s etc.)
The truth is, wearing your shirt sleeves rolled up over your jacket sleeves is whilst listening to the New Romantics is pretty stupid, but no more so than Bell bottom trousers and "Itsy bitsy teeny weeny yellow polka dot bikini" in the 60s or huge great baggy jeans with the underpants showing above them and music about drive-by shootings in the 90s.
*start of flashback* ..no wait, it's just dawned on me - "Beverly Hills cop" is entirely responsible for the whole 80s calamity...Don Johnson's style, the music of Harold Faltemeyer....*fade flashback*

I don't know but when you find them thank them for some of the most important musical direction changes in years.

Which musical change was that? Seems to me the 80's were awful, and its music came in three categories:
1) Lameassed bubblegum music featuring the synthesizer way too much.
2) Depressed, whiny Brit bands using the synthesizer way too much.
3) Fruitcakes in makeup and leather pants basically continuing the tradition of the 70's bands like KISS and Aerosmith.
And since we're talking about music, I suppose I can leave out the fact that rap was invented in the 80's.
The best thing that ever happened to 80's music: the 90's.

I think we're in agreement that all the worst music is the stuff that is most popular. However, in the 90's, punk rock evolved to the point where it could actually be understood AND sound good, two things it never did before. Ska music reappeared from the 60's, and swing music reappeared from the 40's. The 90's were still pretty disgusting (whoever came up with the intellectual and artistic larceny called "sampling" has no business bitching about Napster), but at least there was some stuff worth listening to.

I still suffer from being unable to wear sleeves down because of my NewRom days.

(Sandman hops on his soapbox for a little comparison)
80's: In the 80's we had heavy metal. Groups suck as Iron Maiden, White Snake, Ozzy, etc. This is/was my type of music. Then we had the Bangles, Go-Go's. No need to go into that sissified music genre.
Then the "original" rap. Back then, rap was actually not bad. At least it took SOME talent. These days, ANYONE that has a monotone voice can rap. All you have to do is come up with something like "today was a good day. I didn't kill anybody with my AK". With crap like this, no wonder our kids are in the trouble they are in...
The "original" punk bands. I was actually a member of one...
90's: A total waste. You get this Ska crap that should have stayed dead. Along comes the "new" punk bands. All they do is scream into the mike (not much different than the 80's). Gangsta rap. Now there's one for you. These little wanna be tough kids started listening to that crap and began to think they were really tough.
2000: Not sure what's in store nowadays. Since the 80's music is gone and the new music bites, i now listen to Country.

I don't know who is responsible for the "80's" but it seems that Adam Sandler is taking the blame! Just check out any of his movies!

P.S.
Monkees= Bay City Rollers= (late 70's) Bee Gees = Duran Duran =
New Kids on the Block = Back Street Boys = N' Sync = The Admission that these nebulous brainwashing marketing bastiches are actually better at what they do ( IE make scads of money ) than I am at what I do; ( Na Na Baby Baby Yeah ) which is NOT getting rich...
Of course I AM greatly successful at NOT getting rich....
I've been at it for a fair amount of time now and I haven't once come close, even, to solvency. ( unless that involves the imbibing of solvents; in which case, it may have happened in College once, but the reports are unreliable; you can't prove a thing...)
Therefore, I would like to solicit submissions for the
"NO ACCOUNT NO SIT-UPS CAN'T DANCE INSOLVENT NICE THOUGHTS SOCIETY"
as an alternative.
Let's face it folks, we're not gonna make any scratch. But we may be able to make each other happier.
PLT, Mick.

OK, OK I admit it...
It was me, and I`m sorry!
Back in 1979 I got bored of all that hippie crap and I invented the 80`s.
I take the blame for everything bad that happened during the 80`s, including Boy George and MC Hammer.
It won`t happen again.

Was it really you? 'Cause my money's still on the good folks at H2G2's Scapegoat Service (http://www.H2G2.com/A368057). And, if it WAS you, do also except blame for the truly horrible stuff, like the Reagan Administration?

I know it wasn't me! I'm not responsible for anything. You can't prove I had to do with anything!

Sunhome Posted Jul 6, 2000
Errr...The reagan Administration?!?
No, I` sorry, I can`t take responcibility for ALL the S**T in the world.
But the music and bad taste clothing part is something else, and like I said I'm quite sorry for some of it.
And when I think if it; why care about politics at all??
It'll only give you a headache anyway.
