Hands up who hasn't been annoyed by students?
LL Waz Posted Mar 1, 2005
Hands down.
arvind/dancingbuddah has been very polite, not at all annoying and I've been aware of him on the site for a year. He's written some good stuff - I'm glad to be able to help.

Based on the fact that supreme egotist Hoo () and Greydesk seem to have had positive experiences I have to say I don't see the problem.
I had been aware of them but as their presence had been polite, constructive and as far as I could tell, bona fide they certainly didn't annoy me and I was rather interested in what they were up to.

I've seen them around (although they apparently don't want to talk to me *sniff*), and they've seemed perfectly reasonable and polite. The keenness for 'phone interviews seemed a bit odd, but if that's what their professor wants, then fine. It's not like they're repeatedly pestering people- if you don't want to talk to them, then they seem quite happy to be told that.

Meeee-oooooooowwwwwww!
Mina.
I like you.
I respect your experience in this field.
I respect the authority that gives your opinions.
I am interested in your opinions because of your experience in this field.
I think that you over-reacted.
I think that you were hasty, unfair and have come out of this looking a little bit foolish, which saddens me slightly because I like you and respect you etc.
If holding complex views makes me two faced, then call me Janus. But I refuse to let another person do my thinking for me just because I like them, and I know you well enough to know that you are capable of both liking and disagreeing with someone at the same time. I won't quote private emails here, but I can email back to you the email in which you said it.
So....
I respect you.
At the moment I disagree with you.
Live with it.

Hoo changed the subject header?
LL Waz Posted Mar 1, 2005
Just wanted to clarify that my 'hands down' was in answer to the first post subject header.
KA, that's not necessarily any better, not once minds have been sent down the wrong path...

"If holding complex views makes me two faced, then call me Janus. "
I shall. And since you are a lady, I shall prefix it with the pronoun "La", pronounced with a long "a".
I hope this is satisfactory...

I haven't been approached so can't say much about the students.
I was slightly concerned about a comment made further up the thread though, that the comments here will be fed back to their Professor in order to refine future versions of the class. Does that mean we should anticipate approaches of this sort on an annual basis?

Would it benifit h2g2 as a whole to be considered an example of an online community worth studying?
I think we should be flattered.

>> "I was slightly concerned about a comment...anticipate approaches of this sort on an annual basis? "
Bi-annual, actually. But seriously, we picked h2g2 to study out of our own volition - we weren't assigned to to any one particular community. Our prof will, in all probability, discourage repeated studies of the same community, esp if it hasn't changed since it was first studied, or the first study is comprehensive enough that it doesn't leave much to be researched anew. So, there's little or no chance that any of us will be back.
The nature of the feedback has to do with the requirement that we conduct phone interviews (something which everyone in our class has to do, regardless of what community they're studying) - we hope to convince our prof that IM interviews *can* be as good when carried out with discretion, especially for certain kinds of communities where members are particularly likely to be skilful users of IM (I can testify to having had an interesting part IM, part phone interview with Hoo), and that she should *in general* have no problems with students doing one or the other.

*Stumbles over thread*
I must say that if I were assigned to do a study like this by a fearsome professor, a) I would mean it to be a compliment if I selected Hootoo for such a study, and b) I would be horrified if I received this kind of welcome, or indeed any sort of controversy at all.
And as for the spam charges, I've seen numerous personal brawls and unintelligible gibberings trailed all over most threads (without, I should note, a politely worded apology before and after it), yet that kind of thing is usually considered just part of Hootoo life.
