I am Ford and I am doing a speech on what time schools start in different areas of the world. So if you go to any school, or ever did, please post what time and what school it was.

We currently start at 8:30

School times for me (which are probably still accurate 10yrs + later) We always started at nine in the morning and finished at 3:30pm.
Larbert High School and Stenhousemuir Primary School, Central Belt, Scotland.

Between 1977 and 1983 I started at 8:45.

In Germany, school usually starts in late August/ early September and ends sometime around July.

Otherwise, school starts in first grade.

Otherwise, most schools start at 8:00

Back in my East-German childhood, school started at 7:00 - that is, unless you were unlucky enough to have a lesson in the "zeroth hour", which would have been something like 6:30 (but this was a very rare thing.)

Lessons in Germany are 45 minutes. There is a minimum of a ten minute break between lessons, with lunch break up to 30 minutes or more.

Oh yeah, Is hould probably have mentioned that that was at a UK public (private to USians) school.

How about what time to start teaching spelling (or text editing)?


In NZ 1979-1983 we started high school at 8.45 (although I was usually there by 9 ). Can't remember when we finished, something like 3.15 or 3.20 I think.

Saw an interesting programme - on the Beeb I think - about teenagers and their behaviours and sleep patterns/needs.
Apparently, research showed that teenagers are unable to sleep before about 11.30pm but still need a lot of hours kip.
To get to the point of this post - and link it properly with the thread - school for this age group shouldn't start before 10.00am.

I know we used to finsh at 3:45pm (1991-1998) but I can't remember what time exactly we started might have been 8:50am.

In Australia Primary School (1981-1988) began at 9am and finished at 3.30pm. High, or Secondary School (1989-1994) began at 8.50am and finished at 3.30pm.

what does shcool mean something that is cool maybe

when i was a kid, which was somewhere in the early 80's, we've started at 7:45. and as far as i know, the lessons in Bulgaria (the country where i come from), still begins at 7:45

In the UK they can vary a lot.

Our local primary school is 8.55am - 3.15pm.

Secondary comprehensives 8.30am - 2.30pm (they think kids learn better in the morning, so they get them in early, have a late lunch & only one afternoon lesson - guess how many have disappeared then)
or 9.00am - 3.30pm

Independent school 8.45am - 4.15pm (but longer school holidays)

It's quite common for independent/private/public/boarding (whatever you want to call them) schools to have lessons on a Saturday morning too.

Hey, you don't hear us complaining. The good kids don't disappear.

School started whenever I felt like it.

Now it starts at 8:00 am, but they pay me for turning up now and that makes a hell of a difference.

7:25. Ugh.
