Facebook? The kind of people who migrate there aren't *real* hootooers, I think. Facebook is a scary place.

We, and our community spirit, will probably hit a low a week or two after this rule took effect.
What can we do?
- Live with it, work through it.
- See how it goes afterwards.
- Continue to spread the word.
Press for reinstatement - on safety grounds?

Well, yes - except that if it does happen it's more likely to be a slow attrition, until there aren't many left...

hi
-
after 5 yrs, ive learned, its not do we sit back and wait, its that we have no say on what happens to a site we are making each day, for others to find as newbies.
-
how many times as some poeple contacted bbc and other parts, with no joy, even the support gives you a long winded email which you need to the in law to understand jim

Hmmm, cue one email of rather annoyed nephew (under 16, just!) asking what is going on.
I take what the italics above have said and hope something is sorted. In the meantime, as said nephew is 16 in a couple of months will he be able to get back the account he has used up till now when he is 16? Not seen the page they get when they try to log in so dunno whether he has now lost his old account?
BTW, just to add my voice I also am very much agin this especially as I introduced two such people to this site and they have found it both useful and informative as well as sociable. Anything I can do to help rescind it, I shall be there!

i would think that as there is months only to wait till 16, you could look for the link to contact h2g2, and ask for the page to be suspended for now, and the user and password to be activated again on his 16th.

i think its something like

I think the true reason users under 16 have been banned from the site is because, unlike everywhere else, people here write decent, mostly correct, actual English. Can't have youngsters exposed to THAT, can we?
One of my daughters is among those expelled, and will have to wait for more than 11 months in order to sign on again...

Has your daughter received any kind of communication from tptb informing her of her banishment or is her space just blocked ?

I have to say, my firefox opens to myspace, facebook and H2 tabs. I love them all for different reasons. Facebook is my high-nergy, frantic 'city life' social life, I get to stay more in touch with people I'd otherwise rarely see or hear from unless I was down the pub all the time (which I cant afford!) which means that I dont have to feel like a complete social leper
Myspace is a little more gentle, slower. I stay in touch with a few of my closer friends who dont like facebook, bands I gig with and such like.
And then there's here. My very own on line radio four

No announcement. But when Squirrel tried to log on, she was told that "for her own safety she had to be 16 or over".
They also recommended that she go to My CBeebies instead, where she gets to "adopt a pet and decorate her very own area". She just turned 15 and is in 12th grade because she legally skipped three years of school - but she's not mature enough to be on Hootoo?

Still presumably there is *nothing* to stop a U16 researcher just getting a new webmail account and signing up again and lying about their age?
Heck it is what I would do....

And then spend their time worrying about what they say on-site, being careful not to mention what they did at school today etc.
