Listening Radio 1 on the way to work this morning, and they appear to have removed the word 'drug' from Nickelback's Rock Star.
Why? What am I missing?

Last time they did this (to Fairy Tale of New York) Radio 2 were not doing this.
So now Radio 2 are the bad boys of BBC radio

On Virgin radio, they left the line
"everybody's got a drug dealer on speed dial"
but censored "ass" twice. I only know this because I looked up the song lyrics to find out what word was missing because I couldn't work out what would be be bother censor-worthy and would fit the space.

TMF (a digital music video channel on Freeview) censors both ass and drug-dealer, while The Hits (same sort of channel) censors neither.
Bit silly really.

I have to admit it's just as silly as some of the things I've seen lately. Here in the U.S., the FCC is trying to fine "NYPD Blue" for a shot of a nude woman's bottom. While yes, the United States is more stringent on stuff such as that, the show has been off the year for many years (I think between 7 and 10), so it's ridiculous to fine them that far after. Not only that, it's the one scene compared to some of the more risque stuff (and Dennis Franz and others showed their tails in the buff on screen).
Personally, I think a lot of it has to do with Janet Jackson's "Wardrobe Malfunction" back in 2005 in the Superbowl. On the plus side, the jokes are a lot cleaner (and funnier) than before, mostly because when they tried to be crass, the jokes didn't come across. The flip side, IMHO the UK can effectively tell a joke using this method. Monty Python, Blackadder, and a few other shows clearly show that.
I think people really need to understand what really needs to be censored and what doesn't. The FCC is right as far as nudity, which currently in the U.S. you can imply it, but not show private parts. But, if you allow people to use ass (outside of the proper meaning for animal), crap, and a few other words, I think it's ridiculous to fine someone after the fact for one brief nude shot in a now defunct show.

I wish they had a bit of censoring on Channel 5. Seeing penetration from the inside on some "Sex Tips" show was not how I wanted to spend an evening. Still, now I know what a cervix looks like.

I look forward to the day when they censor complete Stickleback songs, didnt the Eagles do that same subject much better 30 years ago? Dire Straits 20 years ago?
Anyway I really get annoyed at things like songs denouncing violence being censored as much as songs that are ambivilent or boastful about violence. Welcome to Jamrock talks about how bad violence is but when played on BBC stations the references to violence ar bacwardsmasked out.
Yet you can talk about all sorts of sexual indiscretions aslong as your euphamisms are oblique enough.
Its all a bit silly and if the truth be told I learnt to swear without the help of any naughty words in music videos, you can see people pretend to shoot each other in Cowboy films or do it for real on the news so what they are hoping to acheive is beyond me.
