What I found amusing about the television report was the newsreader saying it was "the first Northern bottle-nosed whale to be seen in the Thames since records began".
I can think of two possible scenarios for this:
(i) Records began *today*.
(ii) Some guy started the records on (say) 14th March 1611: "Noe Northerne bottle-nosed wales in ye Rivere Thames today. Forsooth."

According to a news report on More4, the 'records' began in 1913. I don't know what they were recording, but I'd expect a whale in the Thames to be noteworthy.

There have been whales, porpoise and dolphins in the Thames before. This is just the first Northern bottle-nosed whale.

The words 'forced perspective' spring to mind. It's a low-tech method that the film industry has used for years to make something look big in relation to something else. The 'smaller' plane on the left could be some distance above the larger one. Alternatively, the 'smaller' plane could be closer to us than the larger one, but proximity could make it look bigger than it really is. Either way, as the picture was taken from directly below the planes, there's no way of judging the vertical gap between them.

morning. just found this thread. gonna go get a cuppa and read the BL.
i saw in an irish paper this morning that an 11 girl has been confirmed as the youngest official herion addict in Glasgow. she fell asleep at her desk in school and couldn't be roused.. so they found out that way, and she's now in hospital.
apparantly she, and a group of mates, buy the drug from a female in the shopping centre and smoke it. and didn't see anything wrong with it cos everyone they know does it!!
i fear for my kids. we never had that pressure.

Not so much the story - more the name.
