The 5 dumbest SF films

Spinning off from the 'intelligent films' debate, what are the _least_ intelligent films you've seen? Note, this doesn't mean that they are not entertaining, or worth watching, but they need to pander to the lowest common denominator and make every mistake in the Hollywood film-mangler's book. For instance, I despise 2001: A Space Odyssey, but I wouldn't put it on this list because it's not dumb, just rubbish.
My 5:

1. The Core
2. Thunderbirds
3. Signs
4. Barbarella
5. Mars Attacks!

Thunderbirds- is that Captain Scarlett ? I faintly recall the tv-series.
I agree on Mars Attacks and I despise Alien - only ever saw the first film, and perhaps it's not dumb, but I'd put it on my list smiley - smiley

Spacehunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone.

Beyond stupid but an absolute classic of its genre, in my opinion. smiley - smiley

Hmmm tricky as its hard to separate crap and dumb.

I'd agree with Barbarella
Plan 9 from Outer Space (dumb as they come - but hilarious with it smiley - winkeye)
Battle Beyond the Stars - that may come under the s**te category however.
Battlestar Gallactica
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (the 70s/80s film)

Thunderbirds is a different series to Captain Scarlett as was Fireball XL5 and Stingray. But they were all made by the same people (Gerry Anderson and wife) and so bear a striking resemblance.

Thanks, it's always difficult for me to know which is which, cause it's really very long ago that I've seen Captain Scarlett - I loved the music they started with smiley - biggrin - and I haven't seen Thunderbirds, just was told it derived from the Captain Scarlett series smiley - smiley

By Thunderbirds, I was referring to the live action (i.e. no puppets) remake currently in UK cinemas. I saw it a couple of days ago and cringed all the way through at the mangling of everything associated with it. I have a certain amount of affection for the original, which makes this version all the more unforgivable.

Actually I'd like to add Highlander 2 in there. Shockingly dumb and toss too.

(Remove Battle Beyond the Stars if one need be removed from my previous list)

Gladly, the cross-eyed bear

Worst Sci-Fi movie for me is "Battlefield Earth". This 2000 stinker starring(?) John Travolta was described by Roger Ebert as "like a bus trip with someone who has needed a bath for a long time. It's not merely bad; it's unpleasant in a hostile way."
The original story was written by L. Ron Hubbard, which probably explains a lot.

Battlestar Galatica, not sure you can have that, not because it isn't dumb, but because technically there never was a film- there was a double-length pilot that just happened to get a theatrical release in the UK. It aired on TV in the US, and was made for TV.

The Reverend Something or Other

Just for info, I saw Battlestar Gallactica at a drive-in theatre in Newfoundland, Canada, a month or so before Star Wars appeared. So atleast here, it was a theatre-release.

Ah. I didn't realise it got a theatre release in Canada too. FIled away for future reference smiley - ok

Geggs

Timcop

Universal Soldier

Stargate (though the TV series has a good effort at making it sound reasonable)

Independance Day

Godzilla (the remake, obviously)

Star Wars Ep I: The Phantom Menace

Robocop 2

Muppets from Space

That's more than five isn't it? Sorry. Got carried away.

Oh, I just remembered Flash Gordon. It's great fun, but completely dumb.

As is The Rocketeer.

Actually, I reckon a film has got to work pretty hard to be good when it's REALLY dumb. The dumbest films I know are ones that try to pretend to be sensible and intelligent, but totally fail (e.g. The Core).

Have to agree with Battlefield Earth.

It was so bad. I can't believe I wasted several hours of my life (that I'll never get back!) watching it.

1. Timeslip (Michael Crichton pap)
2. Battle for Endor - An Ewok Adventure (need I say more)
3. The Time Machine - (with Guy Pearce and Samatha Mumba *cringe*
4. The Island of Dr Moreau (with Marlon Brando - utter smiley - bleep)
5. A.I (Jude Law perhaps a saving grace. a very slim one though.)

Alienssss, Highlander II, and others(only the first was OK; the TV series was better than some of the subsequent movies)Star Trek IV; I may get flack for this one but it was just dumb. I even saw it 3 times at different stages in life to see if it was any more meaningful; it was not!
That's 3; 2 more

The Stuff ( or is that more horror?)
and
can't think of 5 now.......Got distracted thinking about how bad "Tommyknockers" was; that was a horror novel technically but had aliens in it; don't know how it turned out though; tried to make myself read it all but life is too short for bad books.

Oh yeah; the Matrix sequels. For such a fabulous intelligent movie it just went down and dumb. Especially the last one.

Maybe Reloaded and Revolutions were dumb, or maybe you just didn't understand or like them. Care to say how they are dumb according to JustBob's definition?
