"to go to the states is another matter though! a visa for my french wife takes 2 trips to paris for both of us (there's a consulate here in town but their authorization to process paperwork is limited to smiling nicely), fees of 335 + 180 USD, plus a medical visit to a doctor who only works for the US embassy (and is not recognized by french social security)... total cost around $700 plus the train fares (figure another 700 bucks)... even calling the embassy on the phone costs money, about $20 on your credit card payable to unca sam... welcome to the USA!!"

You were robbed!!!! I got my app the other day (no idea why, just antsy, I guess!smiley - winkeye) and it said something about a $70 fee, and no doctor visits mentioned. Also, the apps are at any post office.

I first went "abroad" at 18 -- to Canada!! And shortly thereafter got involved in a brief flirt with crime -- my boyfriend preferred American ciggies, so I smuggled him a couple of packs. This was in 69 or so, and the Canadian border guards searched my purse -- well they searched everyone's bags, actually. Lucky they didn't spot anything funny.

riotact : like a phoenix from the ashes

resident or non-resident visa? for us a non-resident visa would be $100 (was $75, then $50, then $45, now $100...
that's the other great thing: rules & fees change so often. when we started, the amb-usa website led to believe there would be no need to go to paris; when we turned in the papers it was possible to do it all in 1 day, when we got the papers back they hadn't given us an app because 1) the days had changed and 2) we would now need 2 apps. start over!

anyway, i'm guilty of getting this string off track, let's get to the subject at hand. i'd like to escape from my desk to the little place in the factory where a colleague is toasting his retirement (ssshhh...)

I'd go to Annecy in the Frech Alps, I spent a couple of days there last summer just basking by the lake and I can honestly say it was one of the most beautiful towns I have ever seen. I may go to retire there, but that's at least 50 years off. I first travelled abroad when I was 7 but it was on my Dad's passport, I only got my own passport last Easter so I could go to Dublin. I'm also entitled to, but have yet to claim, an Irish passport, I might get it before I go travelling around the world.

Don't know what the average age is for UK kids to have a passport of their own.

My daughter had hers at 9 weeks old so I guess she brought the average down a little

You can call me TC

As has already been mentioned, in Britain kids can't be on their parents' passports any more. This was changed about the time my littlest was born - in 1988.

Although I've always had passports for my boys, they have always travelled on their German ID cards, except for the eldest who forgot to get his renewed when he was 20, so fortunately he had a British passport handy. He was due to go to Spain that year, and applied for his new ID card, but it wasn't ready before he left. Then he applied for his German passport for travelling to Canada, but that didn't arrive on time either so he went to Canada on the British passport too.

Don't know what he'd have done if I hadn't gone to the trouble and expense of getting his British passport for him.

Kids - what would they do without us?

Do you have to go to the Embassy in person for a visa (for any country?) I'm sure that I've done it all by post for people going on business trips to Russia or Arabian countries.

...Or did you just prefer not to trust your passport etc to the French postal system, riotact? Or was it because it was a resident visa?
