Not a great deal to do as there were no LBWs. Mainly just counting to 6 a lot and making sure people weren't having more than the allowed 5 step run up.
Apart from that it was all drinking and laughing at the sledging

Naah, i just about knew everyone on both sides and it is usually played in the right spirit, although there are always one or two who get a bit carried away
You can't get out unless you have either scored a run or faced 5 balls and you have to retire at 30. Also, everyone has to bowl a couple of overs so everyone is involved rather than a couple of 'stars'.
The result isn't really that important in the end. Half of them probably wouldn't be able to remember who won the next day anyway LOL

"carried away" as in carried off on a stretcher?Sounds like a great day out altogether. In stark contrast to Hk, where cold drizzle seems to have set in to the next millennium. Still I can dream of sunshine, strawberries and champagne -my cricket isn't actually any more upmarket than yours - just that a couple of bottles are easier to carry than an icebox of tinnies.:-0

Carried away as in a little bit too competitive.
Nothing wrong with champagne per se, but not good to have a bottle of the stuff sitting next to you when you are fielding LOL
Sorry to hear about hong kong, at least you have the rugby 7 a side to look forward to

"Everyone has to bowl a couple of overs". A question - in first class cricket, when can a team change bowlers? At any time? Or does a bowler have to complete an over?
In baseball, I think anything goes, meaning a team can change pitchers at any time. I vaguely recall a team bringing in a left hander to pitch to a right handed batter (statistically better), then the batting team switched to a lefty hitter, then the fielding team brought in a right handed pitcher ... 30 minutes or more without a pitch (new pitchers get a lot of warmup throws).

The bowler has to finish their over before being replaced, the only exception to this is if they were badly injured and couldn't complete the over, then someone else is allowed to bowl the remaining balls.

... and in a *One Day * competition... sometimes called a *limited overs* competition... the bowlers are generally allowed only a maximum of 10 overs each!! So, it pays to have at least 4 good bowlers in your side or you end up with a very weak attack

Thank heavens for the Grauniad's coverage during this world cup. Its kept me sane while in a cricket-free wilderness. That one was possibly one of the best, but all the over by over commentaries have been worth reading/avoiding work for.
And yes of course cricket is cool.

To all cricket fans who are disillusioned with your sport, repeat after me...
"Take me out to the ball game, take me out to the crowds. Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks, I don't care if I never get back. For it's root, root, root for the (home team), if they don't win it's a shame, 'cause it's one, two, three strikes, you're out at the old ball game."
Baseball season starts in two weeks in America. Lord, why am I posting this when I'm already in too much trouble as it is?

My very abridged CD-ROM dictionary has this for rounders: "An English ball game similar to baseball." So the main difference for Americans like me is that most of us know what baseball is, but have probably never heard of rounders. Many of my friends have never heard of cricket. Those are big oceans, although they seem to be shrinking.

Quite surprisingly (for me as a Brit) I've previously been informed that there is quite a strong 'amateur' cricket scene in the states...

I have also heard this. I believe anywhere you find West Indians, Pakistanis, Indians you will find a cricket competition

As an Aussie i have a slightly different view of the game
If all teams played to win rather than not to lose i think you would find it a lot more enjoyable.
