Watching it again, it strikes me as though the film suggests the light of the nationalist Nazis being born from the death of the internationalist Olympic flame...Considering what happened after 1936, very prescient!

Yes I believe the idea of running with an olympic torch from athens to the site of the games was invented for the 1936 olympics.
