Well put Abbi!
Saturnine, while you're here, I've been wanting to say well done for a clarification you gave on a thread recently about the difference between schizophrenia and multiple personality. It was a very clear and succint explanation, and it was great to see the general confusion about mental illness addressed so well. Your post got lost in the L**m melee I think, so here.
I must have missed the P.O.O. and W.E.E. conversations

Hi kea
there was a lot of resentment over not being able to speak up about current events, ie Afganistan. That changed the mood a bit. But the big change was after SSO, so many people didn't come back. The digibox group changed the character, but I think we have all settled down after that now, and we do need the new blood.
I think the last 6 months to a year.

Thanks Kaz - that makes sense. I've read about the afghanistan time and I remember the Don't Mention the W*r time. I was away when SSO started which might explain why I'm missing the difficulty that others have been talking about.
I suppose I am one of those people who values dissent. And I also seem to learn alot during times of conflict (like during the Iraq thing). Even this last week of the multiple account drama, I have found much of the whole process interesting in terms of human behaviour and the functioning of h2. So I tend to see those times as just part of the deal - an integral part even. I guess they need to be balanced out though or it all gets too much.

Kea! Thankyou & you're welcome!
As for the P.O.O. and W.E.E. conversations...there is a link to the W.E.E. page on my personal space.

There is such a wide variety of people here.
One of our newer researchers U553748 Luthiena has such a refreshing attitude. I can honestly say that when you happen to come across people like that, that don't know anybody here really, but in a few weeks have already had a positve impact on the site I am so glad this site exists.

Well, i've been here now for 2 years & i can honestly say it has changed my life for the better. i have met so many people through hootoo who i truly count as my closest friends, who give me immense support & i would almost certainly never have met them any other way.
As with any community, there may be people who get their kicks out of bitching & sniping generally, so be it, just try & avoid the places they hang out. If they pop up from time to time, they are entitled to, it's a public place. If you are down the pub a the local bore comes in, it's just a fact of life. Ignore them, or just respond politely, they will go away eventually if they don't get a response.
hootoo gave me the motivation i needed to actually write a weekly column for , which I only stopped because of internet access problems, hopefully if these get sorted, i will return to it.
Technically, it seems slower than before, which probably leads to "letter" type postings as you say, rather than short, chatty stuff. i think a lot of people have Instant Messaging too & use this for that sort of thing, it is definitely more satisfying than waiting around if that is the kind on conversation you are in the mood for.
Email; phone; text, Instant messaging...all ways of commmunicating, all appropriate for different circumstances. But h2g2 is STILL a community & a bloody good one in my opinion. So there!
Terri.

Just had a wonderful, uplifting phone conversation with shazz. Mainly because of this thread existing. Lots of new ideas for , plus a lot of personal stuff.
This wouldn't have happened if it hadn't been for hootoo, we would never have known of each other's existence in the first place. "online life" merges into supposed 'real life".
i think this proves the point.

Hello everyone
I have always tried and be an active member of h2g2 contributing to projects, clubs and by submitting entries. I have even start a campaign highlighting the fact that Thurrock (borough) in Essex does not have an A&E and that need one for this ever expanding borough. Due to committments I do not have much time on-line and try and make the best of the time I got.

i have to say that ,as an ex L/D user who thought i would never find another site like it when it closed,i was SO wrong.i have been using h2g2 since march 2003,so i'm a fairly new memeber ,but i it.
it amazes me when i see see people say"in real life"r"reffering to their lives away from h2g2.!!
i am disabled and dont go out very much at all....h2g2 is is my social life.
i have met some wonderful people on here, and made some very special friends,,,,some of who i have contact with away from the site.
i cant thank all the people who work hard to make the site what it is enough, and all the friends i have out there, for been there.
i can't say anything negative about h2......there is happiness ,sadness, and real caring on most of the threads..and i <loit...THANK YOU!!!!

Smurfles,
Thankyou for posting. There are a few of us in the same boat and feel the same way. Due to illness and disability, we cannot have a 'normal' life, and communities like h2g2 allow us to socialise and feel part of something instead of feeling isolated and worthless. Being a sub/guru/ACE has made me feel worthy, since I was unable to work, my self esteem was rock bottom. Because I was such a career person and deterimined to succeed in everything it came as quite a shock to be so helpless. But doing stuff onsite gave me the chance to prove to myself that I could still do stuff.
Whatever my mood is, there is always a place to go, silly, happy, sad or fed up. There is always someone to chat to who is feeling the same.

Dear smurfles,
We have met, and I salute the way you have expressed what h2g2 means to you. I feel exactly the same way, and I was devastated when the last "upgrading" occurred and I appeared to have lost all contact with everyone.
Have a good weekend.
