A Conversation for Ask h2g2

A while back we had this talking point A956478 Your Greatest Hits on h2g2.
So I thought I would start a thread on a similar thing. (I know there have been previous ones, but more the merrier eh?! and this seemed like a good time )
I have only been on h2g2 since October 2002 when I got a PC.
I want to know about the site pre-rupert.
How your involvement in the site has changed - did you used to be a volunteer? Which part of h2g2 do you like best? Tell me some funny stories about the staff! What did you do online before h2g2?
Old researchers, old staff, new researchers, new staff. Big howlers made on site!!
If you could do one thing, anything - what changes would you do to h2g2, if any?
Let's have a real good *positive* community thread, thinking about the great stuff on h2g2

The one thing I'd change would to be magically wave a wand to give some of the people who used to post on here a lot, but who've been led away by RL stuff, so they could come back and post more

I think there was a question recently about pre-Rupert days. I unsubscribed, being too new to have anything to say on the matter, and cannot offer a link. But I wondered if you saw or remembered that earlier thread (which was not overly long ago)?

I would make it possable for H2G2 to be able to obtain the IP number of all its members,This way H2G2 and all of the DNA sites will know if members are creating multiple accounts, This would stop people and actions of recent events.
Also BBC DNA Will have the power to complain about such researchers to there internet server providers and have access terminated by there ISP when they are abusing the site in such ways.

Can I have that wand after you please, 2legs. That would be my first choice too.

I know things have been difficult - that is why I created this thread, so that the community would try and look positively at the site. I wanted to try and improve morale.

The places I used to hang around a lot (when I signed up under '2legs', and actually began posting and contributing, ), was after Rupert, and the places were, 'Camalot', 'the green room, which was part of H2G2ers annonamus', 'wind force 12', and I can't remember where else... oh, yes, 'questions only' threads I used to spend a lot of time there, now, more and more its spending time in 'ask h2g2', and in peoples journals/PS's, Guess thats partly a result of having gotten to know people over the time I've been here; so its more conversations on their PS's, and in their journals...

Oh, and one of the funniest moments has to be when an Italic, changed their name to 'nighthoover', and posted in a certain thread called 'cancel'

Which one was that then????!!!!
Come on guys - some of you must at least have some juicy gossip from the meet-ups?!!!
I am going for a kip and I want to see at least a few more posts for when I wake up
I would change the green Peer Review banner across the top in Goo!

I couldn't say who it was... I'd loose my position in teh Potato army, and the ASL probably wouldn't be happy either All I'll say is she used to spend some of her time on H2G2 in her own personal dungeon Meets?; I was always too drunk at them the Leeds Raddish was amusing, but only when I jumped down the steps and badly sprained my ankle, before* the main evenings drinking had gotten underway

Well, if I get my a**e into gear before the Unoffical Spring H2G2 Weekender Butlins meet, there could be a few 'interesting' photos and who else could it have been? I remember the 'great battle' of the conversation threads; between Oh No No, the thingite thread, and the 'questions only' thread... which we, in the questions only thread won I don't think I slept that night, so great was the cause of getting more posts than the other thread now , how about that for total madness I think I had something like six or seven hundred posts that day/day and a half, t'was fun though

I 'm usually on Ask and if i'm not there then in peoples journal entries

things have come a long way since then.
"look positively at the site. I wanted to try and improve morale." Well perhaps someone has been waving that wand around. I've seen a number of people back visiting who hadn't posted for over a year. Two years in one case - just been speaking to one - running into old friends here is very .

I've been around for nearly five years... definitely pre-Rupert.
Pre-Rupert h2g2 was lovely for the most part. We only had a few researchers that posted often, and that little nucleus was "h2g2" for me when I first joined. After a bit, the ACEs and Gurus and Subs and so forth were created, and h2g2 started to take more shape. The site was slow so most posting was more letter-centered rather than fast conversations. It seemed to be a lot about community and very little about cliques. I became an ACE after Rupert, mostly because I knew a lot and had actually come back. And then I became a Guru for the same reasons.
Don't know any stories about the staff. But my favorite joke has to be the "My Sex Life" page off of Moxon's u-space.
Before h2g2... I did basic email and AIM online. That was about it. And I had my own webpage and had been planning on learning html until I discovered XML.
What would I do to change hootoo for the positive? Make it a bit more entry-centered again. Bring back the older editors - Mark, Peta, Sri, Dharmesh, etc, and bring back at least Abi and Sam and Ashley from the newer editors. And - this is impossible - change the attitude of the site. I miss the wild young days of the .com era and the early bit after the move to the Beeb.
Sorry - that was meant to end up being positive.

More conversations without name calling would be a nice start.
It would be nice to see some of the old researcher names come back.
More people reading edited entries and the talking points might help.

I was so proud when Mina asked me if I wanted to be a guru.
I am proud of my other badges too, but because this wasn't one I volunteered for, but was offered, it seemed extra special.
I tend to spend phases in each area, peer review, conversations and clubs.
I have started to write for the guide now, I have been named as co-author by commenting in PR on a couple entries, but only recently got my first submitted solo entry picked Yay! it was like I had won the lottery
So now I have about 4 on the go and one in PR at the moment!
I have met some really nice people here. People that don't know me, but still go the extra inch. Recently I saw the best of h2g2 when people pulled together to help someone else. You don't get that in other places. That is what the spirit of h2g2 is.
