Why do we use 'nuts', 'bananas' and 'crackers' as synonyms for insanity?

Interestman-
Is that used for insanity? Can you give me an example of a sentence it is used in? I'm Belgian.

Well, 'insane' rather than 'insanity'.
Three examples from the OED:
"While I have been a special case for mental treatment, it seems odd that Old England, generally speaking, has gone nuts."
"Before we all go bananas about electric cars let me remind you that this is nothing new."
"This war is driving me crackers. I'm bored to death."

It is impossible for a pirate to vomit underwater

It's not you know. I've vomited underwater. It wasn't pleasant, even more so than usual vomiting, as it kept floating after me.

Today, the 1st of May, the day that President Obama announces (he's on my TV making the announcement right now) that Osama Bin Laden has been killed, is also the 8th anniversary of President Bush announcing "Mission Accomplished in Iraq".

Some hornbills have eyelashes:

Yes. Those are definitely eyelashes. That means my trivia calendar was wrong. I did a very quick (and obviously insufficient) check on google, but didn't get much info.
Thanks.

That sounds better - flowers are much more suited to that sort of song. Thank you, CZ.
