I'm sure I've heard a few Yiddish words for it though.

Mel Brooks could put some of the filthiest lines in his movies and they would go right past the christian censors who didn't know any Yiddish.

I'm sure that when Hebrew was a colloquial language there were a few words for penis. It's just that the Hebrew we have now came from religious texts and became dismembered, so to speak.smiley - winkeye

The computer science term, "debugging" was coined by Grace Hopper.

While Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper is known for her many other important accomplishments I can't help but smirk a little.

Oh...*loads* of Yiddish words for penis. 'Schlong' for starters.

Since I've lowered the tone already...if you have a few moments to spare, it's worth doing a google search for Hebrew porn. You get stuff like 'The Rabbi's Daughter and the Arab'. You can tell a lot about a culture from their porn, I reckon. Probably.

No, it's 'putz' for starters, then, when you're old enough and if you're lucky, it becomes a 'schlong'smiley - smiley

Much is made of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, but in fact, in Ancient Rome crucifixion was a common form of execution.

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am...

All this talk of Hebrew penises has reminded me of a useless fact... the word 'b*llocks', often erroneously thought to be an 18th Century corruption of 'bullock' (a castrated bull) actually dates back to at least the 13th Century. The first known use of the word is in the 1382 John Wycliffe Bible, Leviticus xxii, 24: "Al beeste, that ... kitt and taken a wey the ballokes is, ye shulen not offre to the Lord..."

"A female pig is a sow."

All pigs used to be called swine, with the word 'pig' used for their young. When the word came to be used for adult swine, a new word had to be found for the young ones. Hence we have 'piglet'.

I put this forward hesitantly, bearing in mind the discussion on factoids in posts 5523-5, but according to author Elizabeth Gilbert the Spanish cry of Olé harks back to a North African custom of calling out the name of God (Allah) when a dancer became inspired and began to outshine his peers at a religious ceremony. These days it's more likely to be used to express approval of a sportsman or a bullfighter, but that's where it originated.

I have to say it sounds like folk etymology. Are there any Spanish linguophiles out there to confirm or deny this?
