Which post was that then? The one where I asked the question? A question can't be wrong. Only an answer can be wrong.

Yes, it's a part of the UK as it is a piece of English territory.

Rockall was officially annexed on september 1955, when the navy landed by helicopter. This was to remove any claims by the Irish Republic, Denmark and Iceland.
It was further made secure by an ex-SAS soldier, Tom MacLean, who camped on it for 40 days in 1975. This was to ensure the 12 mile exclusion zone, and to make sure its potential Oil/Gas reserves remained British.
John Ridgway (currently sailing the world on behalf of Albatross) also reside there in the 1980's. These two tales appear mixed up on the web.
However Greenpeace also stormed Rockall for 48 days to secure protection from exploitation, and to remove British fishing rights. They also replaced a broken beacon installed by the british , with a solar-powered one, further attempting Britains claim to the rock.

So who does own/control/protect it?

Over to you.

Yep, although they had to be pitoned in, and suspended. On three occassions, and there is only one ledge, Hall's Ledge. Not very comfortable. Unfortunately I can even remember the first one!!!

Since Rockall could be legitmately claimed by the UK, Iceland, Denmark and Ireland, *I* have decided to lay claim to Rockall, because I wrote the H2G2 entry on it. Problem solved!

But Archangel Silly Willy was the subeditor of the entry, so he has a legitimate claim as well. I propose we have some wars to decide the matter, which should be called the Wars of the Noses. Do you want to choose the Red Nose or the White Nose?

Well, Silly Willy helped me on to the island, but he didn't go onto the rock himself. That's like saying that my estate agent has the right to own my house!

In a war I shall choose the White nose - it will provide camouflage, what with all that bird poo on the rock. A red nose will be a dead giveaway.

Ah, but although there have been a number of birds sighted at rockall, none have been noted to roost/breed there, so I'll take the red please, G.
