Oi, I'm going to tell Summerskill about you. You swine. You rotter. You cad.
On a slightly serious tip:
Chris Moyles was recently defended for reinforcing the Gay = Crap thing. Adolescent gay people need support, not inadvertent belittling. It'd be nice if they had a few role models in the England team...
(sorry to be all heavy: it's an issue that's quite close to my heart)

Sorry, two posts appeared while I constructed that glorious post 21.

Chris Moyles is close to your heart Rather you than me.
I'll never forgive him for the "grief montage" he played on 9/11, including the Dunblane mother's screams. He's pathetic lowlife.

Chris Moyles is such a lard-ass he's close to everybody's heart, or at least his bloated, bigoted shadow is.

So one can only have role models that are the same sexual orientation as ones self?
Hmm.Some of my heroes are gay.Oscar Wilde for one but I'm irretreviably hetro.I frankly think that the way one swings has nowt to do with how good you are at your chosen profession.Lets have less division on the grounds of isms.
However if you just wanted an excuse to talk about totty why ask the question?Just say you fancy them...and ask if they are available some time in the future to contact you...

As an adolescent realising you're gay in a predominantly heterosexual world it's helpful to hve role models, just to know that you're not weird and you're not alone.

Agreed! But the question didn't make that point. It was more about gossip than anything..
I'm all for people having a private life and sometimes I think speculation isn't fair under those circumstances.
So are there any openly gay sportsmen/women apart from rattynova(female tennis player)?Maybe talking about those who are admitting their sexual orientation would be best?

True. I think the reason footballers are subject to speculation is that statstically there should be /some/ gay ones, but nobody seems to be admitting it. Of course, it's possible that the hetero environment of football stops gay footballers giving it a go in the first place.

Justin Fashanu reckoned there are many gay footballers playing at top level. I would wager that any player who comes out would be slaughtered at away games.

They're certainly slaughtered in the lower divisions

Well black players used to be slaughtered until the FA began to face up to racism. It's about bloody time they confronted homophibia in the same way!

I only know of 3, Martina Navratilova, Claire Balding (equestrianism and now BBC sports presenter) and one of the English gymnastics squad in the last Olympics. I was researching it for my dissertation which argued, amongst other things, that the lack of openly-gay sports men and women is harmful because it seems to prove that gay people do conform to certain stereotypes and it gives gay kids no-one to look up to.
One of my good mates at Uni is an amazing rugby player, but he feels he has to play for the Spartans, Manchester's gay rugby team, or hide his sexuality. He feels he can't be openly gay in mainstream sport. This is so worng it makes me scream sometimes - there must be gay sportspeople out there, but they feel they can't come out and in this situation they're helping no-one.
Sorry to get so serious

What about the diver who (in)famously cracked his head on a diving board during the olypmics, and then got a gold medal. Greg Louganis, was it?
