I was given what is usually a 'boy's name' (Shawn) and I'm not a boy, so grew up hating my name totally. Now it's okay though. But I remember sooooooo wanting to have a real 'girlie' name when I was a young girl like Cathy or Nancy or, well just about any name that ended in 'y'. Thank god I never got that wish!
Back to original topic (sort of) there is also 'Mac' for 'son-of'.
In Spain the 'de' in a name also means 'from'. Paco de Lucia, for example. Whoops, cannot remember at the moment what the 'son of' thingy is in Spanish. And have to go to work RIGHT NOW. So will find out later.
Hetty or Betty??? Sorry Kerr, but you have to admit that *was* very clever. I actually prefer Heather to Liz, myself.

i am pretty sure the 'aka' is because of religion. we have a fella work with us who changed religion to muslim so he could marry his wife. he also had to change his name. one day he was Derek Foster, the next Mohammed Al'Sajef or something like that

How could I not remember that? I remember laughing a lot about that name. And the wrestler The Rock has the real name of Dwayne. Though I`m sure you wouldn`t be laughing for long, looking at the size of the guy.
