Hmmm...
I hope dobby dies...sorry but I just don't like him.
And I hope it isn't sirius either...or lupin.
Snape I think will be involved till the end, double agents are far too useful to be written out.
As for hagrid I dunno, of all the characters he seems most likely - lovable but not really a big hitter.
As for book 4 not developing the plot...so bringing voldermort back and setting up a major cliff hanger doesn't develop the plot?

I've a hunch Lupin will come a cropper at some point. JKR has said that she really likes this character and he's bound to make another apperance, probably mixed up with Snap and Sirius - who are both set to have more prominent roles.
won't get her hands on a copy or even have time to read it until Sunday evening.

"The thing that p'd me off this week was the report about JK filing a law suit for "tens of millions of dollars" on that US newspaper for publishing extracts from the new book. WHY??? Surely any free publicity is good? Isn't that what sells books? And she really needs the money doesn't she."
But if she had wanted to release extracts to a newspaper before publication date she could have made millions (because the newspaper would make millions from all the extra sales). Theiving is theiving and publishing extracts before the book is published *without permission* is theiving.
So no she doesn't need the money - but the newspaper should have known better than to breach copyright. Hopefully if she wins she'll dontate the money to charity.

Ooh, yes - please kill off Dobby. Annoying little goit, he is.
I can see him in his death throes now, in that horrible squeaky voice: "Goodbye, Harry Potter. You brought me salvation..."

Thanks for that - I was beginning to think I was the only dobby hater. Although maybe it would be better if voldermort turned him and he bacame evil
No just killed would be better.

It's precisely why I've always hated book number 2. He's the wizard's equivalent of Jar-Jar Binks.

I fear for Ron and Hagrid, as I feel they anchor Harry, and killing them off would have a very bad effect on him. However, as she said she cried when she wrote it, perhaps Lupin or Hermione are more likely? The only characters I think are safe are:
- Harry (unless book six is Harry Potter's Ghost and the ...)
- Voldemort
- Snape (because I think the final confrontation will hinge on his loyalties)
Anyway, I am eagerly awaiting tomorrow, to see what happens. I pretend to myself that it is due to the different camps (Dumbledore, Voldemort and the ignorant politician types) and I'd like to see the interplay between them. But really it's because the books are fun and I want to see Lupin again!

I think Ron Weasley will come a cropper. R.I.P Ron. I totally agree with Pencil Queen about the
whole JKR suing that newspaper. She don't need the money and when
I heard about her suing them it really p'd me off. She should definately donate the money to charity (cus she's gunna win). To
be honest those extracts dont exactly give a lot away and like was said it gives free publicity and GMTV revealed more than that newspaper did will she sue them? Is this the end of "Britains #1 mornin program" I hope so,, lol

I agree that Snape will definitely be pivotal.
But, as tonsil revenge started of this thread by reminding us, Ms. Rowling is so bleeding wet that she cried when she killed off Diggory at the end of book 4. Really, it could be anyone.
On a much more important note, who's going to captain the Gryffindor Quidditch team now that Oliver Wood's left?

About Dobbie, maybe they will do a Keyzer Soze thing, and he will turn out to be the evil mastermind behind it all in the end

To be fair, I didn't think JK was crying on telly (although I didn't see it), just describing how she cried after she'd written the bit where she killed whoever off.
I'd agree it's got to be someone pretty important, and I don't think she'd be swayed by something like the actor that plays a key character dying, so I guess it's probably not Dumbledore. I think he knows too much. And I don't think it'll be Snape - too much history there, unless there's going to be a big revelation in book 5. I'd have thought it was too early for that though - more a book 6 or 7 thing. There's always Sirius Black, of course, although he's shaping up nicely as the alternative father figure...I'm not rushing out to buy it though. I can wait for the paperback like I did with the others but I'll borrow someone else's before then!.

I'm with you on this one Master B, it could be *anyone* particularly since she said a similar thing about book 4.
If I were a betting man I would pick somone like Lupine, Fudge or a lesser school character like Colin Creavy. It will be a character important to Book 5.
The whole Quidditch team, let alone the captain, is an interesting question. Will Fred & George still be at school? Harry donated his winnings to them to set them up in business, so they should be down two Beaters and a Keeper. How old were the three chasers?
It wouldn't surprise me if there is considerable effort taken in the early part of the new school year in setting up a new Gryffindor team. It's either that or suspend the tournament, which JKR would need a pretty good reason for.

But maybe it could be Dumbledore...done for symbolic reasons.
Does she kill off characters well or does it have a flat effect? In other words...is it part of the story or just stuck in there to get attention?

*Joins the "We Hate Dobby" lobby*
I think it'll be Malfoy (junior).
Harry has enough other enemies and potential enemies - he's not essential for plot development.
On the other hand, I don't know if he's likeable enough for anyone to weep over his demise.

IMO Cedric's death was well handled, unfortunate but necessary.

How may people posting here actually watched the interview last night? From some of the ill informed comments either not very many or lots but just not paying too much attention! Just to set a couple of things straight...
JKR did not cry during the interview. She mentioned that she cried when she had finally killed off the character that is to meet his/her end and admited that this may seem an odd thing for an author to do (my money is on either Hagrid or Ron Weasleys dad by the way).
The reason for wishing to quash any revelations regarding the story is simple and eminently sensible. The whole reason for the publication date being the same all over the world is so that the story is not ruined for the millions of kids (and me) when we come to read it. Hurrah for her suing the newspaper in NY who leaked details of the latest tome - both legally and morally they were in the wrong. As to the monies from any successful lawsuit, I daresay she will make a charitable donation as she also mentioned in the interview that she feels the amount of money she now has is quite ludicrous and she does indeed give to charity although she did not want to go in to specifics for obvious reasons.
My copy is (according to Amazon) already winging its way to me and I for one can't wait!
