There's a bit of a discrepancy between the physical ideal that attracts and the reality. I have a thing for tall, thin, pallid, dark-haired effeminate arty types - physically, people like Alex James, the bassist out of blur. However, in reality, I can go for something completely different.
It's much more difficult to compromise on personality though. I'm attracted to intelligent people who can hold a good conversation on anything or nothing, who preferably share interests with me. A good sense of humour is terribly important: I couldn't cope with someone who was deadly serious. Also someone who can cope with my general exuberance, because otherwise it'll never work...

A similar sense of humour and similar outlook on life are really important. As is consideration, respect and a willingness to compromise!
