Very sad news indeed
It was an honour to sub-edit some of his writings - I shall go back and read those and his other Entries. I think they make a fitting tribute to a knowledgeable and eloquent man.

It's strange, despite the fact I'd never met Bels, nor do I even know his real name, I'll miss him... I can only imagine what it must be like for you and your family Gubernatrix.
However, from the brief glimpse we get into the varied personalities behind the postings on this site I found his strength and fortitude quite amazing - and I sincerely hope that, one day, when your grief has lessened, you can look at what he wrote here with pride. His words and strength may just end up changing someone elses life in the future.
My thoughts go out to you all

Indeed, he shall be sorely missed, I'm grateful to him for sub editing my writing, and I'm very glad I got to meet him in R/L on one occasion.

Such a sad loss of such a wonderful man.
Bels' many attributes will be missed by many on H2G2 - his intelligence and humour and especially his great kindness, to name just a few; a gentleman in every sense of the word.
We are the better for having known him.
Our sympathy and very best wishes to Gubernatrix and the family.

I've never posted to this thread but I've always lurked (if that's the right word in this case ) but have never known quite what to say. He will be missed not only by his family but his online friends too.
Goodbye Bels.

I don't think it's in any way an understatement to say Bels will be greatly missed. An excellent sub, an exemplary community member, and from the few occasions I met him at meet-ups a bloody nice bloke.

Thank you for finding the time to let us know, Gubernatrix - it must be very stressful for you all at the moment. Bels can never be forgotten, he has left an invaluable legacy on this site alone, no doubt elsewhere, too, and we can all learn from his strength and humour.
Goodbye Bels.
