Oh right. So we're having popularity contests now are we?
Great way to lose friends and isolate people in my opinion.

I think, too, that given the number of repeated names, the people who have been nominated thus far really *have* made an impression on the community at large, not necessarily because of something statistical that they did or what have you. These are the people that the community feels weird without - those of you who joined post-Rupert will have no idea what this is like - but when the site finally re-opened, it was very eerie without certain people, and remains so in several ways because important members have been lost along the way. It's the people who, as I think Titania or AGB said a long time ago, "are the furniture in many forums" who are the ones who are the backbone and the legends of the site, the ones who pop up everywhere and always have, the ones you'd miss if they weren't there, even if you never did speak to them.

Well if it's not a popularity contest, then we have been doing the right thing all along! I have only nominated people I think the community would be at a loss without...likewise others!
If that's not right, then it's just a popularity contest!

thats completely not my point. i am just trying to figure out how you are choosing a LEGEND. it is a big word and an honour to be given it, but how?

Beats me. I don't really care. I'm just telling who I remember as the sort of great, well-known people I heard about when I joined.

You don't choose a legend!!!!! A legend pervades after death, does it not?
So it will those who will be remembered after the sites demise!

amy - your view has made more sense than anyones so far, thankyou.

reefgirl - she scares me

although the site has 'died' at least once majorly and several times just a minor relapse, so anyone pre-rupert should be fine and those post rupert just have to show a server downage after they joined.
But I think legend is perhaps too strong, although there is a definite amount of visibility that somepeople who have 'made it' have attained. I've always wondered about that myself because just posting everywhere doesn;t guaruntee 'making it' but then neither does just one or two short informative and to the point posts.
Ho hum.

To be honest, I wouldn't really be interested in seeing a static list of 'legendary researchers'. To me, this conversation is far more interesting than any list that could be compiled from it. It gives an insight into individual researchers and why people like them, it also gives an insight into the minds of the people posting nominations.
A static list of legends would be just that - a list of words...
I think this conversation itself is a far better way of recognising legendary researchers than just putting their name up on a page.

Agreed - I find it far more interesting to find out who has influenced who and some of the commonalites between all of the lists.
One other person - Mike A. I think he's long since been banned from the site, but I do remember him showing up everywhere when he was here.
Key: Complain about this post
