Non human researchrs - should they be allowed?

Post 1

Is mise Duncan

There's an artifical intelligence program that I've been playing around with which is based on the A.L.I.C.E project (see http://www.alicebot.org ) that responds in a reasonable way to forum based conversations.
Should/would such a thing be allowed on H2G2?

I agree.

Keep humanoids only on h2g2

Yes, I think it would be great fun if one of the researchers was an AI program like Alice. We could do the Turing test and see who could be the first to detect the bot.

I tried an experiment with Alice on a chat room. I went into a chat room and whispered to other chatters and typed their questions into Alice. It was possible to carry on a conversation for some time without them suspecting. Although maybe this says more about the sort of people who frequent chat rooms smiley - erm

I wonder iif they would start any Societies, and how many people would join. I can see someone tailoring an Alice-type program to behave normally for h2g2.

There is nothing in the house rules that states researchers have to be human. So as long as they follow the rules, like ussmiley - winkeye, there is no valid reason to exclude them.

"I didn't want to offend people by seeming to make light of what is a serious ilness. So instead I decided to try to make a program which sounds like Fundamentalist Christian."

Am I the only one who spotted the disastrous logical flaw in this pair of sentences? smiley - yikes

Fishy - That's me!

I'm not sure it was scrutinised that closely Just Bob.

IMO there was such a sign of relief that the person with these 'strong views' (to put it lightly) was not human after all.

Then we found out, it was a hoax, and he was human after all, but a very commited to his religion human.

I can't see what would be wrong with using A.L.I.C.E. to post on h2g2. It's based on AIML, (which is XML) so you'd have to program it with responses, and as long as the responses don't break the house rules it should be OK.

I found an ActiveX control for it somewhere, so all you'd need to do is link the ActiveX control to a web control or .NET to let it read and post!

Sounds like a good idea actually!

i don't know A.L.I.C.E. and haven't been to the site yet. but as a general response to an AI researcher on h2, i'd say no, not yet. i think there are enough issues here already around identity. i know that humans are going to have to deal with the AI stuff eventually, but i think its too soon.

Failing that, I'd settle for Brent Spiner, Kenny Baker and Anthony Daniels.
