Nice! I like the Whyte Ave. part, it's one of my favourite places. Did you mention the area by the river, I don't know what it's called but it used to have Joey Tomatoes there. And is the mall the largest? I thought the US one was now.
Glad to see that "Edmonchuk" was not included.smiley - laugh

joey tomatoes by the river? Where the hell was that? There's one on Jasper Avenue, one on Calgary trail by Revy, one in Sherwood Park. I can't think of anymore. There's probably on on the Northside somewhere. But the river valley's all park (except that bloody power plant).

The mall still says it's the biggest.

Is there a Joey Tomatoes in an area with red brick cobblestones? (Oxymoron) I was part of a bit of a pub crawl that included that so the details are a bit hazy......

the one on Calgary trail has the red brick. the one on jasper is totally different. You're not thinking of Earl's on Whyte are you? It was right beside the Mill Creek Ravine. It's a Humpty's now. I'm not sure what you might be thinking of.smiley - erm

Really not that important! I had a good time and prefer Edmonton to Calgary if that's enought to know. Another great entry, where do you find the time for this stuff? I manage to squeeze posts into RL.

I take Michel de Montaigne's little motto to heart: "Qu'est-ce que je sais?" Put all the links on a page and connect the dots with a bit of text.
How come this conversation isn't happening over in Peer Review where the scouts can see it?

kasese<a rather confused individual, desperately seeking Harmony>

Hi there- I've been away for a bit. Edmonton. I lived there once for six months whilst working at the Citadel Theatre during a winter season. (The year John Lennon was shot) I have to admit I realy didn't like it! Then went to Winnipeg for the next winter theatre season and froze again. I spent 4 winter seasons there equiped with the parka I bought at Marks and Sparks in Edmonton. As for the querie about American news beingbroadcasted or written about here in Canada I think it's because Canadians are far more (generally) educated about world issues and are equally more interested than our American counterparts. I don't think it's because of Free Trade. Back in the 60s American Politics, History and geography was an integral part of school curriculum. I would hazard to guess that most young Americans today don't even know who our Prime Minister is and probably think that they may ski in Ontario in July. Aabbi- You're not alone on the "I wish I was a CanadiaN" thing. Michael Moore said the same thing in a recent interview on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Radio 1. BC has always been the Pot Capital in my mind. You also have great Mushrooms eagerly waiting to be picked in the forests , fields and roadsides. Although they're rather slimy, they're terrific when suated in butter and served with fried onions and steak! Why injest dried when you can turn the original into a culinary delight? smiley - smiley K

Kasese: back in the year Lennon was shot, downtown edmonton was absolutely dead. It was the worst place anyone could possibly be. I still don't go down there much, but it is so terrible better than it used to be: New city hall, the Winspeare, the festivals. People live downtown now. come back sometime

Something on the 'pot' issue, found an interesting little article (page G3, right below the Air Canada article)in the business section of today's Journal. Briefly:

A Barrie, Ont. operation called Hempola Valley Farms, was contacted in Nov., & asked to donate products for the gift bags at The American Music Awards. They donated, among other things; pancake mix, lip balm, & salad dressing. The co-founder of the company has now been asked to bring his products to Ozzy Osbourne's home for a March 19th auction to benefit both Sharon Osbourne's Colon Cancer Foundation, & Elton John's AIDS Foundation.

Apparently hemp enhances immunity, since it improves T-cell function.

Just thought I'd toss in something factual.

And, yes kasese...downtown Edmonton is...ok, maybe not a totally different place, but it's undergoing a real revitalization. Its kind of an ongoing process, but I really think you'd notice some definite improvements.

Jeez, Jazzedupcurry, I'm five minutes walk from the farmers' market, too. Are we the same person?

but seriously, go look at A986989 in peer review and make some comments since you can actually make some comments. I'll look at your suggestions, but I probably won't use them.smiley - biggrin

Anhaga, excellent link, smiley - cheers

CLZoomer, thanks for the links!

I must confess I too am a member of the 'wanna be canadian' club. My trip to Calgary was a scouting expedition to check the place out before I committed myself to moving. You customs people don;t really like blokes with long hair do they? Especially not when they are gasping for a ciggie after 8.5hrs flight and dead fidgity. Glad I did as I didn;t really get on with Calgary to be honest. The country is beautiful, the city is....odd to my english eyes. Trees, land, trees, land as far as the eye can see, then 'Oooh, look, a tower block!' and then back to the land again. Also seemed to me, although obv I was only there a short time, that the majority of the homeless were first nations indians, most of the suits and people in the glass towers were middle class white. No overt racism or anything that I saw or heard, just that was the way it was. Perhaps I was too sensitive to it.

Unfortunately I didn;t get to Edmonton, or Jasper although I did go out to that big fancy hotel thingy and past the three sisters mountain and so on. Oh, and had breakfast most days in the Princes Park, very nice place. The National Park bit was stunning, sulphur mountain and all that.

In fact I was there whilst Mr. Seagull was filming Exit Wounds (I think) and walked past his entourage one evening.

Still thinking about emmigrating (since I went, I bought a house off a couple who emigrated to canada and now one of my friends and bogged off there!). I think i shall have to look elsewhere than Calgary though. BC looks like the place except for the anti smoking laws smiley - sadface

The anti-smoking laws are not that bad. The pubs and many of the restaurants have areas just for smokers, usually enclosed patios with heaters in the winter. Given that we didn't have a bit of snow this year, those areas are quite pleasant. Many of them have entirely separate rooms, but they are ventilated. The laws stem from workers rights- the servers don't want to inhale second-hand smoke. I quit 12 years ago so I can see your frustration, but my friends who smoke don't mind the laws. btw, outside the major urban areas the laws are somewhat relaxed.

But seriously, Zoomer, put something in the peer review thread for my edmonton entry. It's disappearing down the list. Make some serious comments so our entries can start overwhelming the guide.smiley - biggrin
