Reality Manipulator

My pet hates is business jargon and expressions such as end of, really, whatever etc.

It amuses me when the best someone can do to take charge of a debate is use the phrase 'end of'. Just say, 'I've stopped listening now', its more accurate.

Business phrases such as 'moving forward' are a petty hate of mine too.

Ah, but moving forward we should all be thinking outside the box. Blue sky thinking will ensure we really push the envelope. As team players we need to run all ideas up the flagpole and maybe consider opening the kimono.

End of.

a journalist friend interviewed a PR from some company or other yesterday who said "we're going to sunset that product"

I want to weep.

I can't believe that these expressions have developed so hugely in the English-speaking world. We don't have any such problem in German.

"sunset that problem"

I had to look that one up. Retire it slowly, apparently.

TC, maybe you could set yourself a pet project of making such phrases popular in German smiley - winkeye

While these sorts of phrases might be annoying, the language I dislike is that which limits our potential. For example, I don't like the way the word "opportunism" is so negative, while the practise of unselfishly taking opportunities has no obvious word to describe it.

I don't think opportunism is negative. I've always thought of myself as a ruthless opportunist. Merciless towards my enemies! smiley - evilgrin

Today's PH: people (well, someone in particular) who leaves it to the last minute to shop for birthday presents, asks what I want & of course it's too late for anything that needs ordering. Also fails to take the opportunity to shop & do wrapping when I'm out.

DAB radio I've been moaning about this for years but it's the biggest con ever inflicted on the British public, and they've made it so that if you want 6music, sports extra or 4extra, these are only out on DAB unless you're online, if anyone's tried to use a DAB portable, you'll be the one stood in a catatonic pose trying to keep the signal on DAB, or the person ripping open yet another packet of batteries to feed the insatiable appetite of your DAB for electricity, honestly they're complete rubbish, the only two DAB radios at home I have that work with any degree of reliability I've had to rig up aerials for, I do wonder if they've tried to launch DAB abroad anywhere, the BBC still advertise 'crystal clear DAB', I don't know how they work in cars but I'll bet they're rubbish, the most used switch will be the DAB/FM selector I'll bet! I slung my portable and went back to a FM/MW/LW, about a quarter of the price and it works, but no 4extra, Sports extra or 6 music, I honestly can't remember a time when the BBC actually rationed it's output, I've spoken to the people who promote DAB at the BBC,and they insist it's the best thing since broadcasting began, it's rubbish.

Completely agree with you about DAB, except of course I get a near perfect signal here, but then I can see the lights on Crystal Palace mast straight out the window.
Of course I can't listen to DAB in my car as the radio is FM only and that's a 2013 car.
As for Batteries mine spends all it's life plugged in.
I see plenty of TV receivers on a USB stick for freeview but I haven't seen any DAB ones.
