Yesterday on the M25, there were signs everywhere saying "stay in lane" and "50mph" , yet I still got someone coming up behind me flashing me to pull over to let him (speed) through. Could he not read?

You can call me TC

I have never had bad dreams (except on occasions when I was taking antibiotics). Suddenly these past few days, I've started having quite horrific dreams. Not nightmares, but unpleasant things happening. Still, that won't bother anyone else, and I can forget them after a while. Petty enough?

Today I am fed up trying to telephone staff bank office re pay (or rather lack of) & getting 'there is no-one available to answer….'
I'll be going in person on Wed so they can't escape me!

PH basically organisations providing a phone number but insufficient staff to answer it.

Plus the junk calls - 4 so far today, despite using TPS.

I'm annoyed with HSBC, and not just for tax-dodging misselling reasons. Despite once claiming to be 'the world's local bank' they closed my home town branch (now a trendy wine bar), then closed Southampton's Below Bar branch and then the London Road branch, and then sent me a letter saying they wanted to close my account through inactivity. If you close all the branches, how am I going to pay anything in, eh?

Cough medicine.

It lies and cheats. The first impression is that it may just taste of cherry. But in the end, it just doesn't. It's just, gak.

Scarcely approptiate to mention Luden's cough drops in this thread, horehound cough drops or even lemon drops.

Sometimes hot and sugary lemon-chamomile tea can help.

Today's (first) PH: Other people cutting bread.

We don't buy pre-sliced bread, for reasons unknown pre-sliced organic is horribly dry, and I have a particular way of cutting bread. I lay it on its side, and cut down from the side to the side. It's the shortest cutting route, and the top/crust has more structural integrity. This means that it's a lot easier to get a clean, straight cut for each slice.

So I hate it when someone else cuts my loaves, top to bottom, and leaves raggedy, slanting edges. Leaving me with wedges rather than slices as I try and get it back to a straight cut.

Yes, it really is that petty.

Not at all petty. I had an ongoing bread cutting issue with the ex-Mrs Pink Paisley.

Take note, EX-Mrs PP. smiley - laugh

On a brief tangent, I prefer cutting most bread with a sharp knife rather than a serrated one; no ragged edges, and fewer crumbs, too. In fact, I find a 'proper' breadknife is very rarely preferable.

with you both on the bread slicing. I've found an electric knife the most effective cutting tool. Although I have used my Black and Decker Scorpion saw in the past.

the bread was fine but I couldn't find the electric knife and I'd been using the saw. Frankly I'd use that saw to cut my fingernails, I just love it smiley - smiley

Petty Hate of the Day: Inaccurate portrayals of hypnotism in fiction.

It is not possible to hypnotize a person into doing something they don't want to do.

This is a bit convoluted, so bear with me.

I recently read about a historic event (the Gordon Riot, 1780) in a nonfiction book. It made me think of a novel I read some time ago - within the last few years. The only novel that has the Gordon Riot as part of the story is Barnaby Rudge by Charles Dickens. I found a synopsis online and it's definitely the book I'm thinking of, but I don't remember having a copy of it. I'm not a member of the local library, so that's not the answer.

So that's my Petty Hate for today - reading a book but having no memory of it.

It wasn't an audio adaptation you may have heard on the radio, was it?

I definitely remember reading the book. It's just the title that gets me. I remember most of the Charles Dickens I've read. I just don't remember this title.

American edition with a different title? That's a petty hate of mine. I have several times bought a shiny new book only to find it was an old one repackaged.smiley - starsmiley - star
