Why are geniuses so freaky?
Manx Posted Oct 17, 1999
im not going to pretend to understand that last posting coz i dont. but how can you respect anyone whose fantasy is to become a vampire, and spend the whole time whining that nobody understands them?

I've never met a goth who whined - they positively loved the fact that no one understood them!
That fits!
turtle Posted Oct 17, 1999
Ah, yes, daSilva I agree about the reasons for dressing oddly. My wardrobe is rather uncoordinated usually as my philosophy is something along the lines of:
1. Does it fit? Cool.
2. Can I ride my bike while wearing this? Good.
3. Oooooh, pretty colors!
I tend to stand out most of the time, as you can imagine.
My test measured IQ ranges from 125-140 depending on the test and what I've had for breakfast. So I'm a borderline genius, but what good has it done me? I draw pictures of car engines for a living and have no friends. Almost makes me want to go out and buy some Microsoft products! Heh.
That fits!
dasilva Posted Oct 17, 1999
OK, scary thought(s):
1) Car engines? Pah - I get cruddy siteplans of housing estates (not as complex, but plenty more boring )
2) I did by Microsoft products (well, MS Flightsim...unfortunately Windows 98 came with my machine, hance it keeps crashing...*sigh*)

From a sig:
My real definition of "good in bed" is "someone who
doesn't snore or steal the covers"
Why are geniuses so mad?
Anonymouse Posted Oct 17, 1999
Believe it or not, I can sympathize wtih that. I wasted XX years of my life trying to live in a way that didn't make an less-intelligent SO feel inadequate. I won't do it again.

Purely as a matter of experience (and thus, my own opinion), IQ ratings have little to do with intelligence -or- wisdom.
(They're just an indication of how well you'll do at a game of Trivial Pursuit. )

Granted.
This begs the question why so many people like to brag about their IQ. Personally, as part of a research project into Schizophrenia in the UK, I scored an IQ of 156. Now, I don't regard myself as above average in intelligence, or especially wise, but was contacted by MENSA (The Brainy Bunch Club in the UK) in order to join because of this.
So, what is the point of an IQ test score? Why do some people put so much scope into it?
In real terms, what does it prove? Basically that your good at doing IQ tests, me thinks, and now't else.

Mensa is pretty much world-wide, as far as I know.

I was going to write an article on MENSA, but I'd have to join. Frankly, getting (e)mail from an organisation that prided itself on it's top 2% intelligence reeks of social disfunction and would only aggravate me, so I didn't. Is anyone a member and would help. I promise not to call anyone 'brainiac' or 'egg-head'. Such nicknames I secretly find hysterically funny.

It's not worth it; I found a typo on their web page. Any group of "geniuses" that can't even spell stuff right doesn't get my patronage.

What was it? Intellijence? Brane? Eg head? If the last, perhaps they were referring to someone preoccupied with giving examples...

I don't think Trivial pursuit has anything to do with IQ, but rather memorization of random facts. Fortunately for me, I happen to be strong in both .

That's a very unfair stereotype. All of the goths I've known have been very intelligent, and well liked by professorial types.

That's _another_ unfair stereotype. You need to meet a few goths--then maybe you'll learn that they're not all the same.

I read somewhere that many well-known "geniuses" who have contributed something to the world at large (eg. Einstein, Darwin, etc) tend to follow a much saner approach than memorization: "If it's in a table in a book somewhere, forget it! Keep your mind clear of things you can look up and save your storage for things you can't."
I thought it was a marvelous idea. Now I'm not so sure... My phone number is in the phone book, after all.

From http://www.mensa.org/benefits.html :
Mensa meetings are anything but dull! Local groups meet at least monthly... for dinner and drinks on a Friday night, get-togethers featuring a speaker, or a lively, freewheeling discussion. All with fellow members who share your intellectual interests. Some groups have special get-togethers or activities throughout the month.
The sentence beginning with "All with" is a fragment. It should read "...freewheeling discussion, all with fellow members..."
I think it's funny.
