If you had to stop one movie being burned...

I thought this was about films that don't deserve to burn?

Perhaps Frogbit should just admit he wishes he had had the idea for the other thread first.

This *is* about films that don't deserve to burn - a film is elected to burn, and if you feel strongly about it, you have to argue why it doesn't deserve to go up in flames. I'm afraid simple threats won't work. Things like "touch that and you die" will, in future, earn instant immolation. In this case I'm willing to make an exception - why don't you think LoTR should burn?

Aside from the book being the most read novel ever?

LOTR (all parts) deserves immortalisation for the following reasons:

- the acting is excellent for all of the principle characters
- the special effects and production techniques are brilliantly done, espcially the moving "forced perspective" shots
- the CGI animation of Gollum/Smeagol is the first to achieve real emotional content
- the battle sequences are fantastic and really well executed
- the films use a cast of thousands (literally)

Is this enough or should I go on?

The books are great - it's the film version that's hovering over the Cracks of Doom. But perhaps no longer. One more positive post should be enough to seal its fate. Or one convincingly negative one...

It has a plot and quite a good one too. That ought to be reason enough to save it.

OK, I'm gonna defend the Lynch films, see my positively glowing comments about them on the "burn one film" thread.

Up it goes, onto the shelf, next to Wicker Man, and the animated LoTR.
Next!

Vast apologies - but if you read the backlog, you'll notice that Lynch has burned. And were there short people in red duffel coats dancing around the flickering flames?
In a word, no.

I think it's very subjective, everyone has their own favourites which are favourites simply because they struck a chord with their lives at that particular time. And even if you burn that film, the memories of what it meant to them would still be there.

Having said that I vote for Young Einstien - by Yahoo Serious, because no-one else will. I think it is an educational film as it mentioned Tasmania [Australia] (even though the Tasmanian bits were shot in Victoria).

It's an educational film as it should serve as an A-Z of how not to make movies to future generations...

But we can save Plan 9 for that, so no, into the fire with the wretched mr Serious...

I've not seen LotR yet, but it gets my vote to stay because I am a book-lover, and somebody has had the sense to split a long book into three films, instead of cramming it into one. The animated version had the right idea when it split the book into two films, but the break came at an awkward place in the story.

So please *don't* burn any version of LotR.

I do not like this thread. No patience, and far too much of a subjective view...

Wicker Man

"I do not like this thread. No patience, and far too much of a subjective view..."

Erm, no patience she says, after the one post...far too much of a subjective view? And I suppose your "if you could burn one movie..." thread is the epitome of objectivitysmiley - winkeye

I beg to differ the A-Z of how not to make films should go to Reckless Kelly (the follow-up feature of Young Einstien) which really was a stinker. But I know we're looking for keepers here, so I'll shut up.

I think you'll find that, by default., 'My Neighbour Totoro' is up there on the shelf as you missed it altogether...

by the way, it's a pretty slim and sad looking video shelf with only two vids on it! You'd pretty soon be sick to death of Orks and Hobbits and stuff wouldn't you?

Yes, I'll explain, once again, you nominate films to defend, your eloquence decides whether they get flamed or not.

Bluesshark - I' think you'll find that that one's teetering over the flames - you can't just slip them past without justification you knowsmiley - sadface

So, let's hear it for 'My Neighbour Totoro'

It's a Wonderful Life has to be saved. I like it because it's an old black and white classic(immediately comforting)with great acting and a great story. THE original feel good movie that works every time. It is apparently used in therapy for depression so it is a help to mankind as well. Please keep it or I'll send my guardian angel to show you what life would be like if it didn't exist smiley - winkeye
