Does anyone (but me) remember the 1960s, when LOTR was a fad the *first* time around? Result is, lots of aging hippie-brats named Frodo and Bilbo by their stoned parents, born during the summer of love?
Make no mistake, I am not *that* old, I was at school then, I remember carrying LOTR around school, passing other girls doing likewise, and we sincerely tried not to inflict spoilers on the slower readers.
Same with the Jean Auel 'Earth's Children' series in the 1980s. I remember a woman at the pre-school I took Jimmy to, who had a daughter called Ayla, and who swore her baby's name had nothing to do with 'Clan of the Cave Bear'.
Della the Cat Woman temporarily known as Dodo Chaplet.

Yeh. We all have reasons. We aren't just taking something because of a recent trend!!! *steadfast morals*
And mine *must* be unique, because no one can bloody spell it right...

I wasn't born until 1984. And luckily my namesake was Natalie Wood, who drowned. Hence my email address.
I *had* heard of the 1960's trend for LOTR...didn't that go hand in hand with an Aleister Crowley resurgance too? Why does my brain choose to work when I need to sleep?

It may have done, I just thought of it as being hippie dippy cosmica rama stuff. (I was born in 1953, I wanted to be a hippie, but I was too young, and my parents made me mow lawns and study maths instead...)
My niece born the year before you, Saturnine, is called Annjanette after an obscure TV actress who guest starred on most '60s dramas. (She may have been obscure, but she was good... My sister has no idea that's where her husband got the girl's name).
I wanted to have a daughter and call her Lesbia. Or Catherine. Instead I had sons. Who votes for Lesbia? (Which BTW, is quite innocent)

It would only work if his middle name was Jacob and your surname Disease. Could have been good though
MyĆ”, my daughter, was named so because it's a lovely name
I'm named after my maternal grandfather. The missus is named after her mother.

I was wondering if the LOTR films would spark a rash of LOTR baby names - I can imagine infants schools in 5 years' time being full of Arwens and Eowyns and Sams and Pippins.
In a similar vein, I do know of at least one person who has named their child Lyra.
My husband's surname is Hall, and he insists that if we ever have a child it will have to be named Albert (if it's a boy) or Festival (if it's a girl). Just as well we plan on remaining childless!

One of my friends was most disappointed when his wife refused to allow their son to be named 'Chris'. Possibly something to do with their surname being 'Mistry' well, he had to try
I wonder how all the little McKauly's are doing? Or the 'robsons' and 'jeromes' seem to remember seeing a few of them in the christenings a few years back....
Hmm, thinks, does this mean, if I ever have a son, I could name him 'Sauron' and then whinge at people for mis-pronouncing it?

Names are strange things, I'm not sure where mine came from, and all the meanings people ahve attributed to it certainly were not in my thoughts when it chose me : there do seem to be an explosion of poor children called Kylie and Jason, now in their teens, spawned by one of the nost attrotious and mind numbing Telivision programmes with the possible exception of big brother I ahve a window, not a TV well at least everyone on here isn't using H2G2 character names, as there isn't exactly a huge range to chose from... I say it shows lack of imagination and yes, is rather sad

I want to slip in the names Xatan (boy) and Hell (girl) as middle names maybe when I have kiddies. Combined with really conservative names like Alice or John, it would look excellent...
Alice Hell...
John Xatan...
Looks good to me!
Ah dammit. My perspective of aesthetics. I hope my kids don't mind too much...*pats her ovaries*

I've got a fondness for "old lady names", names that just don't get used anymore, agnes, ethel, enid, rose, winifred, doris etc etc
Old man names are cool too (alfred, albert etc) but there don't seem to be so many and they don't appeal as much (although I'd love to call a child berty)

Rose and Agnes are excellent names. Rose certainly gets used.
My two cousins are called Aimee Isobel Yasmin and Jacob. Both under the age of five. Quite trendy names I think.

Oh. I'll tell you something that annoys me.
When people register their kids as the shortened version of the name,
ie : Sam instead of Samuel.
The Berty thing was what reminded me. Bertram is an excellent name. Only if he is destined to be an NME reader and cool indie boy though...

hmmm I can't like aimee....but then I'm not a great fan of many names ending in y/ie/ee mainly because they sound absolutely awful in a scouse accent....also the reason I don't like the name peter.
My cousin is called philippa which gets shortened to pippa which I think is quite nice.
Jacob is nice...hmm there must be more bible names waiting for a revival.
I love the name winifred, mainly because it was my aunty bin's real name (she wasn't my aunty and she wasn't called bin...but she was a fantastic lady)

Oi PQ, are you aware of what my RL name is? Big poo.
I like Biblical names. I have this oooooooold faling apart dictionary - a good 100 years old - with a names and their meanings section in the back. That's where I decide on a lot of my characters names...

Berty would be short for albert...but then its like fred (frederick/alfred) and could be short for lots of names.
I've got a name that cannot be shortened...there was a bit of a trend for it in my family. I don't like my name and don't associate it with myself I would have liked to have a name with the option to adapt it to your personality etc...and every person should have a middle name they hate...I know I do (mary)
Some names get tainted by the people you know...I could never call a child daniel I've known a lot of daniel/dan/dannys and they've all turned out to be complete jerks.
And I've known too many davids for it to mean anything to me.
Hubby has mentioned liking the name mercedes for a girl yeah right
