In which case please now let us all know the following: The make/model of the soundcard, the operating system under which it is not working, what you have done to try and solve the problem so far.

Have you checked under control panel/system/device manager to check for any conflicts - I had a video card go dolaly when we changed the slot because windows set it up to conflict with the floppy disc

It's a Creative Soundblaster Live 16

It's not working under Win 98

And I've done everything on this thread, plus receiving a minor electric shock just know by earthing a nearby capacitor.smiley - yikes

I'm fed up with the bleeding thing, and the card's going back to the shop tomorrow if it's not careful.

Get SE then.

Your sound card will still be fubar'd.

But at least you'll have an OS that has a vague hope of coping with modern peripherals and plug&pray and so forth. You'd be able to use USB properly too.

Ah come on, sound cards cost naff all anyway. In fact if you want, I have Creative Soundblaster 1024 (not the Live!, just the normal) that cost me about 15 quid....let me know if yer interested.

If you can get it to me undamaged, then I definitely need a replacement!

To be honest, I'm a fairly basic PC user (hootoo, Lotus Smartsuite, bridge, Championship Manager and Links2001), so I don't have much use for SE, USB or anything else like that. I don't own _any_ peripherals with a USB cable.

I know it's a silly question but have you right clicked the little speaker on the bar and opened the volume control panel?

It's unlikely that this is your problem but I'll say it anyway because it's vaguely amusing if not useful: I had a sound card problem recently, it turned out that the problem was the sound card (sitting in the bottom slot of the case) was covered in dust and this must have been interfering with it somehow. I dusted it and it started to work again.

It was in the bottom slot, actually.

*runs off to try this unlikely solution*
