Lets see, how many hours of my life have I wasted on that game, and I never get any success because I always go for small clubs with no money and about 5 players, in the Swedish non league.
I'm guessing that Baldurs Gate is fantastic, I've only ever got to the Keep Inn before I get bored or I get killed.

well the trick is not to attack random passers by. its quite hard to start off with. dot pick pocket people, and as you get better, things get easier. really, it should be seen as a prelude to BG2, which is just awesome.

In BG the key thing is getting a high roll (not under 90) and knowing what attributes are important to the class you have chosen (intelligence, dexterity, constitution, and charisma for mages)..

I agree with pretty much all the games already mentioned, but would like to add a few more.
The 7th Guest, and its sequel 11th Hour. They are, really, just glorified puzzle games, but there is a lot of variation cus each games contains about 15 or 20 (summat around there, anyway) challenging puzzles within an overall plot which is quite puzzling itself.
Don't know if you can still get hold of them though.

Neverwinter Nights (sorta the next gen of Baldurs Gate) is excellent, I found Baldurs Gate quite a bit harder to get anywhere or anything done. Neverwinter Nights though is much tighter, much more focused game, and very pretty even with my older hardware There are some old but good out there (some may involve severe fiddling to get going under Win95+) but I would recommend System Shock, Ultima Underworld, System Shock 2 (though I havn't done much more than load it up so far), Thief the Dark Project (in the budget section right now). Looking Glass just rocked
Until later....

Baldur's Gate - Is there any way to guarantee a high roll?
It all seems a bit too random to me.

just keep rerolling.
in BG2 you can press ctrl and 8 or 0 or something to get full stats.

I have got bored with Neverwinter Nights, it isn't as good as BG series, but the graphics are very good.
I was hopeless at building characters in BG until No1 son gave me a few pointers. Providing you select the best attributes for each character the game play isn't too tough. You can either do this by continual rolling or notch up the points yourself. The BG webring has loads of sites that tell you how to build effective characters.

I fail to see how all these RPGs can be discussed without more mention of Deus Ex - Strong in plot and gameplay, weak in its linearity.
Also, if you like the Civ series - Don't get C to P - it isn't the same and maybe help with my article about them - I've gotta get back to work on it.

Oh you graphics driven creatures! Play Nethack and Slashem, they piss on Baldurs gate and Diablo from a great height. In fact Diablo is well know in hacker circles as a dumbed down version of Nethack - dumbed down in order to accomodate graphics...

I've recently been playing Uplink.
It's a very cool game. 'Hacker' for the 21st century. The graphics may not be stunning, but the gameplay is totally gripping.

Is that like, or is it actually, the old 8 bit game where you had to hack into computers across a network and stuff? Vaguely remember it, quite good.

It's that kinda idea, but Uplink was only written this year, so its nae 8 bit doobry. Hacker was though...

...hmmm, they'll be completely different to Nethack then which is a single player D&D type game - a confusing name...it derives originally from an ancient game called Rogue which got advanced to a game called Hack and then a team of enthusiasts recoded it over the internet into the now renamed Nethack...
