That'll be "The Hardest Button To Button" by the White Stripes. Although "The hardest bucket of mutton" is a much better lyric.

Heard Don Henley's 'Boys of Summer' on the radio this morning, and that reminded my that I used to mishear it as 'Poison Summer'. It still makes some sense in my mind. After all, in the first verse he talks about everywhere being deserted. And why would it be deserted? Because everyone's been poisoned, of course!

For me, that always sounded like "Poison Salmon" - good for me that I don't eat fish
Counting Crows' American Girls always sounded like "American girls are better than noise" (real: American girls are weather and noise")

Of course, then there was Steve Wonder's Pastime Paradise
"They've been spending most their lives
Living in a pastime paradise"
I got that as "Pastor's Paradise"...

Maddona's Like a Prayer, when she sings "no choice your voice will take me there". For years I thought that was "no terrastrial force can take me there". Oops.

Actually, thinking back. I remember thinking that the reason it was a 'Poison Summer' was not because everyone had been poisoned, but rather because of a massive enviromental disaster, turning the water and the air into poisonous matter, and so everyone kept inside their own homes in order to avoid the poison, and hence death. I may even have envisioned a lonely figure on the beach in a Hasmat suit.
And so Mr Henley is talking of his love for a woman, remembering how she looked before the posion came, and of his desire to be re-united with her once the enviromental disaster has been cleared up and there's no further danger of contamination. At the end of the first verse he stops outside her house, but he daren't leave his hermetically sealed vehicle, for fear of being infected, and if she opens the house door, of infecting her.
Not one word of this is contradicted by the song, I assure you.

That changes the meaning entirely! Madonna is often featuring here in the Misheard Lyrics... (Often featuring? It must be late... And I am an English teacher tsk tsk.)

I used to think the song "I just can't get enough" was "I just can't get it up". Which I thought was a very strange thing for people to be singing about.

I also thought it was poisoned summer too. I supposed poisoned by jealousy, or mistrust. But she was just off with surfers?
The version below is surely superior.........?
Nobody on the road
Nobody on the beach
I feel it in the air
The summer's out of reach
Empty lake, empty streets
The sun goes down alone
I'm drivin' by your house
Though I know you're not at home
But I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
You got your hair combed back and your sunglasses on, baby
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the poisoned summer has gone
I never will forget those nights
I wonder if it was a dream
Remember how you made me crazy?
Remember how I made you scream
Now I don't understand what happened to our love
But babe, I'm gonna get you back
I'm gonna show you what I'm made of
I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
I see you walkin' real slow and you're smilin' at everyone
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the poisoned summer has gone
Out on the road today, I saw a DEADHEAD sticker on a Cadillac
A little voice Inside my head said, "Don't look back. You can never look back."
I thought I knew what love was
What did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go but-
I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
You got that top pulled down and that radio on, baby
And I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the poisoned summer has gone
I can see you-
Your brown skin shinin' in the sun
You got that hair slicked back and those Wayfarers on, baby
I can tell you my love for you will still be strong
After the poisoned summer has gone
But glad to be enlightened, just the same.

Luli - eternal dreamer: don't disturb the fluffy pink clouds Posted Oct 1, 2004
Up until a few months ago, we thought that the lyrics to 'You Could Be Mine' by Guns 'n' Roses were:
"With your big slut mother and your cocaine tongue"
while of course it should be
"with your bitch slap rappin' and your cocaine tongue"
And who can forget Crystal Gayle's classic
'Donuts Make My Brown Eyes Blue" (Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue)

"I've Got a Brand New Pair of Rollerskates" by Melanmie
When I was in grade-school.... I thought the line was "I've got a brand new pair of underpants I'd like you to see." I wondered why no one this was an outrageous song, until I learned what the real words were.
