Spitting is still very common in China and, alas, in Hong Kong.(possibly becuase of sticky air pollution?) When I hear someone clearing his throat (more likely to be an old bloke than a young one) I turn round and say "No" very loudly. Nine times out of ten they swallow it.
Perhaps the fact that women can't spit and pee at the same time explains why going to the loo takes them much longer than it does men?
And does the "no spitting" rule no longer apply to h2g2 or is it OK to talk about it if you don't do it?

The no spitting rule still applies at h2g2 - so watch your step.

spitting in urinals, well if it has to be done somewhere..
But why do they, young men mostly, spit so frequently, environmental effect? Genetics? Or, is it because of mouth-breathing, which would be my most prefered explination; rather than breathing through their nose as they should, there appears to be a tendancy for certain groups of young males to breath through their mouth instead, or what, I have a fair idea that this affects their inteligence somewhat, but, what if, the act of breathing through the mouth rather than nose, has the effect of bringing more particulate matter into the mouth, hence bad tastes, hence spitting? Well its an idea, but, so was sticking my head in the oven, and that might not have been such a great idea, (oh the power of hindsight)..

I think it is something to do with demonstrating their coolness, hardness and general separation from all that is right and good in the world. The little tykes.

So do guys spit in the toilet at home? Do they have the urge to spit there at all?

And i'm guess ing that most peole sit in urinals at pubs / clubs (smoky environments) - or is it the same in the work place.

I had a freind ho used to carry a bottle at all times to spit into when he smoked, a revolting habit.

Men only spit in urinals in pubs and clubs - and it's a safety measure to prevent us drowning when drunk...

The logic goes:
(1) Stand at urinal
(2) Spit
(3) If nose is NOT wet then commence urinating

Using this you can tell if you are the right way up or not.

to tell if your the right way up; about says it all ???? and i've noticed the last few days; the people on my floor in halls here, they spit in the toilet before urinating, so it isn't just restricted to pubs and clubs in the urinals; maybe its all public-type toilets; we have a "toilet room" which has three seperate cubicals in it, so its rather like a public toilet only a lot more dirty

I think that the ultimate rule is that you have to spit in the toilette or else you wind up hearing how gross you are for hawking one up on the street per se.

or

If you have to work in an office all day, you REALLY have to take care of that in the bathroom.

Or; don't spit, as the rule says.
I don't spit i just never seem to have the need or urge
