Adam and Eve
Silly Willy Posted Jun 17, 2001
Wasn't Eve created out of Adam's lower ribs, which means she would have exactly the same DNA? And therefore was in fact a bloke.

Xanatic Posted Jun 17, 2001
Yeah, she was the first cloning Actually Adam and Eve were supposed to be the first humans on Earth,(But there is the Lilith thing of course.) and the only ones God ever created from scratch. So I guess that rules out artificial insemination as well. But incest could be an option. According to Creationists after we were kicked out of Paradise everything has been going worse and worse. Which is why Adam and Eve had perfect genes, but after those thousands of years they have slowly degenerated causing all those diseases you can now get from incest. But it seems there are some animals that are immune to incest, I don´t know why. As someone mentioned all pet guinea pigs we have today were breeded from 7 wild guinea pigs. And they aren´t toothless or banjo-playing yet.

There's a fair bit of confusion on this because much of the meaning's been lost in the translation. There are three ways you can interpret the early bits of Genesis.
i) God created only one man and woman. In this case, incest is the only option, and that's the way the Qur'an has it. In the Islamic version Adam and Eve give birth to a pair of twins - a boy and girl - and each boy marries his brother's twin.
ii) God created lots of men and women, only two of whom got involved with a serpent. Adam isn't just a name, it's the Hebrew word for mankind, and it's always prefixed by 'the' when used in the early parts of Genesis, so there's nothing to suggest that God just created one couple. There are also several logical problems with only having one man and woman around. How would Adam know to name Eve as "mother of all the living" if she had yet to have a child? When Cain is banished by God, why would he fear being killed for his sins by others if there's no-one in the land of Nod to kill him?
iii) It doesn't matter either way. Another way of looking at it is that the story's a parabolic or etiological abstraction and not meant to be taken literally, but as a means of establishing truth rather than fact. The way people in Genesis are named would seem indicative of this, as they all seem to have remarkably prescient names. For example, Cain (meaning spear) kills his brother Abel (meaning fleeting breath).

Well, after all it is just a creation mythos. I was just trying to make sense of it while seeing it as being something real.

to Mycroft Sherlocks brother.
good insight.
Your version 2 certainly seems to make the most sense to me.
I will have to think about that for awhile.
Just trying to put order to chaos.

Version 3 is the only one that makes any sense. Why would anyone want to take any of this balderdash seriously?

Personally I prefer option iv which is that it's a slightly confused retelling of the earlier Mesopotamian creation tales, which also feature similar motifs.

Xanatic Posted Jun 17, 2001
Well, the first part of the Creation mythos is stolen from the Babylonians.

ok
here's something to think about:
if Adam and Eve were the first two humans ever, and everyone on the planet is a decendant from them...
what colour were they?

talk about evelution of man kind!
I had somthing more interesting, maby Mankind were created inderectly and the myths are only there to explain to siimple people how we came about. (have you ever read the 'UNCLEAN' Section of the Bible?)

ok, going back to the incest thing.
if we are all descendants of Adam & Eve then we are all related therefore, by definition all couples are having incestuous relationships...
hmmm?

Xanatic Posted Jun 18, 2001
Ehh, you don´t need Adam and Eve for that. Evolution says the same thing.
Adam and Eve were the same color as the jews I´d say. They seem to have had the same "We´re the real humans and everybody else are just b******s" like most small groups of people. Anyone here know of a tribe that doesn´t refer to themselves as "The real people"? But of course the religion has mainly been taken over by Caucasians and therefore Adam and Eve and Jesus are now considered to be Caucasian. But speaking of where everybody else came from, it seems to me the answer is in the "we´re not real humans" thingy. I don´t think the people who did the Adam & Eve myth was too stupid to think about who Adam and Eve´s children married. But what God created was only "Man", then there were still all the "subhumans" like black people, chinese and such. They could go and marry them. Which is another sign of how everything was going down hill after being kicked out of Eden. If you read some Nazi propaganda you can also come across something similar to this idea.
I´d like to say I don´t think other races are inferior to the white. I just think that is what the people who came up with the Adam & Eve myth thought.

I have been talking about this with my sister and my point about Race is Null, Race dosn't realy exist at all, just take the recent DNA Discoverys, but thats a difrent thing, I had a thought, what if Heven and Eden are the same place?

Well, race and species are things that were defined before DNA was discovered. So we don´t really know much about how to genetically distinguish between those things. The problems also arise from arrogance. If we look at the differences there has to be between two animals before we call them different races, that would mean chimps and humans would be the same species. And people don´t like that.

Notsteve (who is a bo selector) Posted Jun 19, 2001
Are you saying I'm the same as a chimp?!
I resent that.
(And I know where you live...)
Adam and Eve
DoctorMO (Keeper of the Computer, Guru, Community Artist) Posted Jun 20, 2001
I think they did that already, a race is a anamal that mates with the same, we don't have sex with chimps and there for are not of the same race. but dogs...

Xanatic Posted Jun 20, 2001
Well, the old defintion where you didn´t know about genetic differences was if you could have children together. But that might not only be a matter of genetical differences. Maybe if you had sex with a chimp you could fertilize the eggs. The embryo would just never get that far because of differences in diet or in pregnancy time.
Chihuahas and Grand Danois don´t mate, does that mean they´re different races?

Mycroft Posted Jun 20, 2001
In biological terms organisms can be said to be of different species if they either cannot produce offspring or else only produce sterile offspring. Chihuahua and Great Danes are classed as different breeds or races but that's not a particularly meaningful distinction in biological terms and certainly doesn't make them different species. They can and do produce viable offspring and are both members of the species Canis familiaris.
