honesty the best policy?

Sounds like his main reason was to spare himself pain, delaying the inevitable, and by the sounds of it turned a potentially forgivable transgression into full-blown heartbreak. In spite of this you seem eager to have him known as a good guy (which I'm sure he is), that shows you are a very kind and forgiving person, and you deserve much better. I hope you find it.
And I'm sorry I loaded it on you before, I was more than a little fragile myself.

Don't worry, you did not upset me. Hope you are feeling less fragile now.
Yes, I probably am a bit over-eager to have him seen as a good guy. He is a fairly good guy, but lost lost lost in the woods, and impossible to have a relationship with. Besides which, I have moved on now, in almost every way.
And it is always possible that the reason I want him to be seen as a good guy is to enhance my reputation as a good picker?
Ego? What ego?

Much less, cheers.
And glad to hear you've moved on. And you could only ever be regarded a good picker, if your taste in website patronage is anything to go by
