Why is the sky Blue?
magrat Posted May 29, 2001
you know what? that makes sense, and has proved once and for all that I do have a brain in which everything is turned up-side-down.

Well, why did you then think that the tap water wasn´t blue? And why areas where the water seems green doesn´t have a green sky?

The sky is blue even a long way from the sea, so it is nothing to do with the sea. I can't think of anywhere there is sea without there being sky so it is difficult to test it the other way around. I believe the sea is blue partly because it reflects the sky and partly because it also exhibits Rayleigh scattering, causing it to be blue anyway.

And the green is a reflection of vegetation surrounding the water, I think.

very simple, if the sky was green you wouldnt know when to stop mowing.

Yeah, the ocean is blue partly because of Rayleigh scattering but mainly due to reflection of the sun. But of course you could say that the ocean is colorless, since those things that give it it´s blue and green colors are not elements of itself.

I've been places where the sea is a brown colour with white foam on the top, but I think that's because of the proximity to sewage outlet pipes more than sky reflection or algae
