DA ; Simply Vicky: Don't get pithy with me!

The Wicca series must be good..
I am, having finished Phantastes, by George MacDonald, reading Waylander II, In the Realm of the Wolf, by David Gemmell.

Both it and Phantastes (written 1857) are smiley - magic

Lucky Llareggub - no more cannibals in our village, we ate the last one yesterday..

I'm about halfway through 'Narcissus and Goldmund' by Hermann Hesse. It's a raging battle between flesh and spirit.

My! That's raising the tone! smiley - applause I've not read any Hesse since my young adulthood. All the usual ones, of course...Steppenwolf, The Glass Bead Game, Siddharta.

And I'm now reminded that two copies of Bernhardt Schlink's 'The Reader'/ 'Der Leser' have been on my bookshelf for two years, staring at me to try and shame me into reading them in parallel.

Ah, Edward the Bonobo, it seems we are cut from the same cloth.
I fear that I daren't open my bookcase. Many unread volumes
will attack me.
Happy reading to you.
Sincerely,
Lucky Larregub

Troublesome mouse and synchronicity Edward.
After 'Narcissus and Goldmund', now up to the plague scene (terrific stuff - possibly his best!) the next book in line 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coelho begins with a prologue about Narcissus.
I didn't know that until just now.

'The Alchemist' by Paul Coehlo seems mildly and curiously pleasant after the tribulations of Hesse's Goldmund. I'm about a quarter of the way through.

And here I am reading Dick Francis (To The Hilt). OK, so it's passable, indeed likeable, but it doesn't exactly troubled the cogs and wheels. I 'll be making a trip to the library tomorrow and searching out Hesse and Coelho (except 'The Devil and Miss Prim' (sp) which I've read - pretty good I reckon).

Just in case I've given an impression of intellectual snobbery...I'm currently relaxing with Margrave Of The Marshes.

Before that it was Bret Easton Ellis - Lunar Park. A bit of a stylistic curates egg, but highly enjoyable and not without its intellectual/literary merits.

Wjat else do I have waiting? Oooh...let's see...
Dylan's Chronicles
Burr by Gore Vidal
Some Milan Kundera (not read any for ages. got fed up with him)
Yet another in Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series
Disgrace by JM Cotzee
...and many more

Me too Edward. Don't want to be perceived as a literature snob.
The next in the pipeline is Charles Bukowski's 'Ham on Rye'.

I've nearly finished the first of the Narnia Chronicles - The Magician's Nephew. Got the whole set for Christmas and whilst I'm enjoying it, it's a bit funny in places due to the language used, like "by gum!", "I say!", and "Why, I declare that's jolly clever!". It's quite fun once you get into it smiley - magic

Before Christmas, I started reading "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel" by Suzanna Clarke but had to put it down again as it was so heavy. Have started afresh.
