Finally cleared the decks to start an assualt on some the lovely goodies people bought me for Xmas, so I'm simultaneosly reading Eric Sykes' autobiography 'If I don't write it, nobody else will', and 'The Book of the Dead', a history of zombie cinema.

Thanks, Tyggreza!
I'm really enjoying Stasiland. I didn't know much about East Germany, but it's an eye-opener! Fascinating stuff.

My current read is 'Cider with Roadies' by Stuart Maconie. It's great! And I can really hear him in the narrative - the whole book has a Lancashire accent. As it's a memoir, it is really easy to dip in and out of, but I need to get on and finish it so that I can start John Peel's memoirs, which I received for Christmas.

<<'The Ode Less Travelled' by Stephen Fry.>>
Is that a new one, Jim? I must look for it.
I'm still working my way through American Gods by Neil Gaiman. Liking it more as I go along . . .

It's new last year. It's a book on how to write poetry. Lots of technical detail, which is nice. I'm learning a lot.

I'm still stuck in the first chapter,Iambic Pentameters, plus I can't bring myself to scribble all over the pages like he suggests.
Ti-dum, Te-tum indeed.

I've just finished The Accidental by Ali Smith. And either I missed the whole point, or I'm just a bit dim.
If anyone can explain the very last part to me, please do so! I actually feel a little bit cheated by that (the rest of it is excellent, though, beautifully written)
About to start Die Verwandlung by Kafka. A Christmas present from

I've just finished reading Thud, by Terry Pratchett (as if you didn't know). Thoroughly enjoyed it, without feeling it was his best. Also read two books after Christmas by James Lee Burke, about detective Dave Robicheaux. There're about a dozen in all, and he quite nicely avoids the cliche-traps he sets for himself (violent, tortured, ex-alcoholic Vietnam vet etc). They get a bit depressing after a bit though.
Now it's back to textbooks.

Just finished - in quick succession - a pair of books by Conn Iggulden.
Emperor: The Gates of Rome
and
Emperor: The Death of Kings
Very enjoyable stuff about Gaius Julius Caesar et al - though those who've recently watched the Rome series on tv will notice that although the names are the same, some of the relationships are different.
He also admits, in the historical notes at the end, that he's tweaked stuff around quite a bit to make a better story - which is surprising since he's a history teacher.

I'm finishing with "In a Sunburned Country" by Bill Bryson. It took a little bit to get past the first two chapters, but I'm really enjoying it now. I can now understand some of my cousin's comments about growing up down under.

After a bit of a struggle to get into American Gods by Neil Gaiman, I ended up quite sad when it ended (really loved it) and so have just ordered Neverwhere, as well as another Lindsey Davis.
Presently reading The Plot Against America . . . so far so good.
Bought The Ancestor's Tale by Richard Dawkins this morning, to dip into here and there (rather than read all in one go). It looks very interesting.

I'm reading 'The Ancestor's Tale' too. Very good, and lots of science, which I like about Dawkins.

Unfortunately, I'm still stuck in the world of cultural theory , but have just had a squint at some reviews of The Ancestors Tale and I *have* to put this on my "to read" list - it looks fascinating.

had a good run up at Die Verwandlung. Most excellnt, I've only ever read Kafka in translation before. The language is fab and I fully expect it to rub off on me.
