One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
by Alexander Solzhenitsyn.
This book provides a remarkable glimpse of life in a russian work camp - and it is surprisingly uplifting and positive. The story still lives with me 10 years after having read it.

A masterpiece from the woman Shakespeare.
It moved and inspired me, I cried for the sheer beauty of the prose.

Perfume by Patrick Suskind
I am not what I would describe as a "reader" but Perfume was the one book that did it for me...the only book in my life which I read in one sitting (over night as it happens) impossible to put down.
How come it is not on everyones list?
How come I have not heard it mentioned in the survey so far?
Is my judgement about its qualities faulty?
