Scandrea vs. Technology
Scandrea Started conversation Jan 31, 2005
Well, I turned on my computer last night to do my weekly backup...
...or tried to.
Apparently, the hard drive in it has gone to HD heaven without warning.
Which means, according to the Apple tech guy I took it to this morning, that everything that I did last week for my honors project has gone with it.
*Tears out hair.*
I'm really trying to look on the bright side here- see opportunites instead of problems. At least I've got the hard copies of stuff I did last week, and I think Excel has a text recognition program. I'm kind of mad about that new media program I got, and my iTunes songs, but I still have the reciepts (I think) so they'll probably replace them. And I've been wanting to get the new version of Microsoft Office anyway.
Anyway... it might be a few before I get back online permanently. Hang on, just a few days...

Yeah, that's the thing- I asked for the old hard drive back, but the guy said Apple needed them. I wonder if he was pulling my leg?

if they stick a new one in then apple may want the old one as an exchange, but it still has all your data on it, so you should point out that unless he copies it all over to the new HDD and opens up the old one, so that it's totaled then that's IP theft, which is very illegal

I nearly cried when my HD died and took all my X Files stories with it, Luckily after a lot of searching and pleading I found them spread amongst varoius floppies and friends
I know how you feel, I really do

Computers are like cars aren't they - OK as long as they are working and blumming inconvenient when they are not. Well like washing machines too really, or fridges, or freezers or tellies or....... anything

strange, and theres me thinking that all HD are the same andf the only difference is the way the OP's system use's them, I,E the way there formatted, for use by the system you have
A 40GB HD is the same untill its in use by a APPLE/MAC or PC and also the DATA can be recovered quite easy on them unless the HD is damaged or the heads sre damaged
Scan go back and see the bloke and ask just whats is the difference, and ooohhoohoh please ask the orquard question's please!
and it should show a recahge/surcharge on the bill too as someone will have to account for it, hope this has been of assisitance

Traveller in Time spinning on a disk
"There are three types of hard disk (well, there are more, just some three basic types are common)
SCSI disks, IDE disks and serial bus types. You need special cabling for each one of them (and their sub-types).
Then we get the Operating System, this needs to index the disk and there are some doen ways this can be done.
Apple uses SCSI disks, and each version of (MAC OS ) Operating System uses a slightly different algorithme to index the data.
I guess the manufacturer will 'try' to find out what went wrong on your systym. Or they are just protecting their own market.
In either way you should get something in return, either a refund or part of the report.
Last time I had a failing disk was fun, I had no critical data on it, but I could see a day by day growing bad space on it. "

Carole, I am not sure I agree. I would be cross and upset if any of those things went wrong, but if it was my computer I'd be all of a heap
I use mine for so many things, not least to keep in touch with the outside world and my friends around the world, not to mention on here.
It has made such a difference to my life, I can't imagine being without it even for a day.
Sad or wot
Oh, and all that techie stuff has left me totally befuddled
