The H2G2 Editors Posted Mar 30, 2004
We did give fair warning that anyone who set out to test the system with unnecessary non-English postings would find their posting(s) removed. They serve only to waste the time of the Moderators and the in-house staff.
Ironically, the posting that survives is the English translation, which is now repeated in the removed postings above.
Regards,
The h2g2 Eds

But sureley the technology exists within the bbc to translate these post as they are recieved or within micrsecs as input is itself translated into binary the retranslated into giff often tiff bmp and all that so human translator checking shoulld not be needed.
Also not forgetting Descision Makers interputation .
Of transgression of offensive lanquage several un ****** Anglo Saxon
thats germanic not english (nitpicking mode)
can be found unmoderated on "Editors pages"

Replying to logicus tracticus philosophicus:
Not for Community websites it doesn't - hence the policy.
But as we've already stated, we don't actually *want* non-English language postings unless the Researcher provides an accurate translation. It excludes those who speak only English, or those for whom English is a second language and who rely on it to communicate with others on this and other BBC sites. It's just anti-social.

"human translator checking shoulld not be needed"
Sorry to disappoint you, but that technology doesn't exist - there ain't a single computer in the world that you can trust to translate the wide and varied types of subjects covered on hootoo.
Oh, and going back to Peta's comment a while ago - They are legally liable for all that goes on here thus, the moderating translators would have to be insured (and you should see just what a translator has to pay for public liability insurance!!!)
For an idea of cost, if foreign language postings were to be allowed on the site and the level of traffic was reasonably low (3 individual threads, 3 languages, French German and Italian), each one with 40 posts per day, each post having 50 words approximately then we'd be charging the BBC over seven hundred Euros a day for translating that - Do you really think the h2g2 budget would stretch to that considering they've just cut back on staffing levels to save money?
Key: Complain about this post
