Oh, and another alternative maybe 'tidal moorings' which would also work. There are certainly tidal moorings on the River Severn for example. smiley - smiley

No worries - it must be the advantage of being an expat Brit who is learning Dutch and loving every minute of it. smiley - smiley

wow, a brit learning dutch!

I always thought that nobody bothered to learn dutch because the dutch are (almost)fluent in every language smiley - biggrinsmiley - winkeye

Is it possible to talk dutch or is there some language policy?

Sadly h2g2 runs an 'English only' policy since joining the BBC... although the odd words/phrases can get through if you offer a translation in the same posting. smiley - smiley

I know what you mean about the Dutch being fluent. As soon as I try my poorly-pronounced Dutch everyone swaps to English. It makes trying to learn it harder than in, say, France! smiley - laugh

Yes, pity...

dan spreek ik gewoon nederlands met een vertaling, dat is niet zo'n probleem..

(then i'll just speak dutch and translate, that's not a problem)

Can't do that, not ashamed about it too

No I dare to say we do not have problems with your being flemish, though the site rules state explicitly postings have to be in english. (examples in other languages should be accompanied by english translations {however bad the english is})

Sorry, despite my Scottish (not English!) sirname, I live in East-Flanders (Oost-Vlaanderen), Belgium, not that far from the Netherlands border (Zeeuws-Vlaanderen). So 'Nederlands' is not a problem; though I speak 'Vlaams', what's in a name. It's the (wo)man behind the name that counts.

Hi Peter smiley - smiley

I see that Max has already explained the problems we have over using Dutch in here. We can generally 'get away' with small inserts and little chunks if we offer a verbatum translation afterwards but, sadly, it is frowned on by the site managers as some unscrupulous people may post unsuitable material.

Thankfully we seem to be tolerated more than most - perhaps we are viewed as upstanding members of the Community! smiley - winkeye

Anyway, would you like to be added to the Dutch Researchers page? If, being Vlaams, you prefer not to be labelled as 'Dutch' then you can be slotted in to the 'honorary' members instead.

I see from your page that you are a professional journalist. I am an amateur one running <./>ThePost</.> here on h2g2. smiley - smiley

all the best ongewoon

Dear people, another British expat who wants to improve his Dutch!
I'm a bit unsure about my "level", are youall translators or just normal people like me?.
I can speak reasonable Dutch in an ungrammatical way, and I have to speak Dutch all day at work.
What I actually want to know is how you learned your Dutch, and of course are there any easy ways to improve it?

Hi ongewoon!
for a foreigner you provide a nice Dutchsmiley - ok

Most of us are just normal people (are there any on this site? smiley - winkeye), so welcome to the club.

If you want to improve your Dutch, go to the Language Thing, F1958566?thread=539700&latest=1 .
The best way to improve it is just refuse to speak English, and don't allow your Dutch collegues to improve their English at the expense of you never hearing Dutch.

Thanks for your reply!
be patient with me, this is my very first foray into H2G2 and I'm sure I'll make a number of errors with ettiquette, but I promise you they're
unintentional. I followed your directions to the language thing and I think I might have found what I'm looking for...now I'll attempt to translate this into Dutch!
