Paper Clip
Lupa Mirabilis, Serious Inquisitor Posted Oct 28, 1999
Because professors have this thing about wanting all the sheets of paper that came from the same place to be attached together in some way. Just one more of their silly regulations.
Sticks, paperclips, and such.

Does this remind anyone else of stone soup?

I've always felt a modicum is bigger than a smidgin. But that's just me.

A modicum is older than a smidgin but I couldn't possibly use an ageist statement like that
Stick
Lupa Mirabilis, Serious Inquisitor Posted Oct 29, 1999
Of course not...besides, age might be _inversely_ related to size.

I have posed the question "which is bigger a smidgin or a modicum?" on the 'Ask h2g2' front page forum.
That should sort it out or make it worse

Oakay, nothing like sticking it out. I birch yew thought you'd never hear from me again. But this is the larch time I make acorny joke.
By the way, a modicom is greater than a smidgen, and could beat it in an arm wrestle any day.

Weel I just read through all this worthless nonsence, twice, and I have to say, you people have made incredible little progress. So I'm here to help (not fix) that. To summerize:
The issue here was what are the most useful things.
Towle is still an uncontested first
Stick is a contesed second
String is a possble third
Paper clips and hairpins go in here somewhere.
I would suggest that to clarify things we refer to the forms, not the cultural preceptions of things. We would refer to sticks, whalebones, and (maybe) paperclips as Stickoform. String, rope and bungee would be either ropoform of vermiform, depending on how open minded you are.
And towles, blankets and items of clothing would be tolwaform.... Maybe.
I've done my part. You guys take it from here.

Lupa Mirabilis, Serious Inquisitor Posted Nov 10, 1999
Excellent idea. So the ranking would then be
1)Towliform
2)Stickoform
3)Vermiform
I presume? Or would you switch 2 and 3?

Here we go again. Same argument, different names.

Lupa Mirabilis, Serious Inquisitor Posted Nov 13, 1999
Yes, but now we have more general categories. We've made some progress.

Not really...
By catorgarising them we have invented complex names for what we already know!
Also, by lumping them together in such braord catagories, it becomes rather boring (other than giving us somthing eles to ague about).
I've just thought of another thing to add to the list
-PAPER
where would we be without it. Just think thousonds of poor school children would never learn about aircraft design (paper airoplanes), basic communication would become much harder, and more expensive, you wouldn't have anthing to wrap that crocory for your nan in, nor make funny hats out of!
