I suspect it stems from olden days when after crashing through the wilderness for a while one would find all sorts of twigs and small branches entwined in one's hair and clothing. Sticks stuck to you as it were.

"What's brown and sticky?"
"A stick."
Leading to other jokes such as:
"What's wet and fishy?"
"A fish."
"What's round and orange?"
"An orange."
I didn't say they were FUNNY jokes.
