What's a sure-fire method to prevent being swept to your death over a water-fall?
No googling or wikipedia allowed.
I might give out a clue or two if I feel you look desperate enough, and there are klaxons just remember be bold, preferably interesting but never obvious.

I'm sorry, I *have* to be obvious... Stay out of the water?

Is it the death part that's to be avoided, rather than the being swept?
If so, avoid the plunge pool. Far too many things that can kill you in the plunge pool. Better to aim for the river slightly downstream where you've still got increased depth, but fewer hazards.
I did gill-scrambling once and we were told to make the furthest jump we could and if possible to swan-dive. The only problem is you've got to launch with both legs at exactly the same time otherwise you'll swerve to one side and hit the canyon wall, as my mate did.

Ask people to divert the flow of the river a few miles away upstream.

Agreed a going into a plunge pool increases the odds of death markedly, so best avoid those.
Is it the death part that's to be avoided, rather than the being swept?
Well the one rather follows from the other, but I suppose the latter.

>>Divert the flow of the river a few miles away upstream.<<
That'd work, but impractical.

>>drown *before* getting swept.<<
A literal reading of the question.
Let's assume you have burning desire to live....

If you're in a boat being chased by villains, have a hang-glider attachment to your boat, provided by Q, like James Bond had in Moonraker. As the boat is swept over the waterfall, you escape certain death by pulling a few ropes and gliding free from the boat?
