Hmmm, those twigs (can't remember the name of the tree) that are chewed in parts of Africa and Asia in lieu of using a toothbrush?

You might be right - but that's neither the answer nor the most efficient route to removing bits of food from between the teeth.

So we're moving on to toothpicks?
Actually, chimpanzees use the twig toothbrush method, so I'd call it pretty basic!

He was charged and convicted of publishing an obscene toothpick. (the mind boggles)
Sadly my source is scant on details; it's actually an entry on another man, one Reginald Bacchus - however in describing his circle of friends (that included Oscar Wilde) it says:
"Another friend was Thomas Wrigham, who occupies a unique place in legal history as the only defendant ever convicted of 'publishing' an obscene toothpick [...] depicting the naked persons of a man and a woman in an indecent and filthy attitude and practice.'
The link to Alice? Bacchus was married to Isa Bowman, who was the first to play Alice on stage. She published the controversial book 'The Story of Lewis Carroll, by the Real Alice in Wonderland.'
