I am not surprised about Berlin, Turkish is a major language anywhere in Germany.

kreuzberg was populated by turks and students
a lot of male germans studied in berlin to avoid getting drafted 
i visited a friend there in 1974. going by train through GDR from rostock to berlin was quite an experience
