Re: post 1674
even i could tell you that isnt spamming! i think SEF explained the meaning of spamming a few days ago in this thread..so whomever is ok'ing these yikesed post in the staff team might need to go re-check the rules on, if any, which rule you broke
perhaps SEF could explain this again for the benefit of staff, aces and any researchers who might of missed it 1st time round, have to say its painstakingly obvious this wasnt yikesed by accident, since clearly these werent 'spam' posts, i think somebody owes you an appology and i would add they ought to return the missing posts but i see further down, for anyone who's paying full attention here, (the 'unofficial' rules of this site are particularly relevant to this thread), that isnt 'at present' anyway necessary as the relevant information has been posted again

"i have actually raised a call to our techies about the missing emails but they couldnt find anything"
the techies? who might they be? do they go by any other names, say online perhaps? well with all due respect i find that rather convenient
"that was when i thought of checking with you that you're using the correct address"
that address was the 1 given onsite in this thread

Re: post 1676
"if we do identify problems with individual volunteers in any capacity then they'll be dealt with in private as we've done already with some volunteers in other groups recently"
if we do identify problems? just how many problems do you want before you consider there may be a problem?! surely there is enough examples in this thread alone, without added evidence in my 'missing' emails, that sounds rather a patronizing statement to us as researchers Jimster..and just going by the way i have personally been treated by 'some' aces/'some' staff/an ex maybe not ex member of staff (have no idea where Mina stands), and i cant speak for anyone else but based on all of the above mentioned, (emphasis on the word 'some'), you are expecting us to 'trust You' will keep your word, and deal with the issues in private? well no offence but your asking a lot from us researchers when until very late on in this thread, h2g2 as a body, did not see there being any problems whatsoever, and you have joined this thread very late on in too and still You say, despite everything thats going on in this thread, 'if we do identify any problems'..this leaves me with an uncomfortable feeling, and im not altogether assured that that may be the case..im not trying to make new issues everytime you post, especially in light of the fact you appear to be taking this thread seriously now, but from my point of view, your asking us researchers to place a lot of trust in You.....
"you feel that the aces get preferential treatment. okay, we hear you"
yes, some aces though theres more too it than that, it appears from the way in which this thread has gone, (round in circles some have said), that though this is certainly a factor, staff are also being held up to question, with examples provided, You said you are subscribed to this thread, im presuming you are taking note of this too
"whatever the outcome, we're at least conceding thats its not going to be as black-and-white as some might want it to be"
theres 2 ways to take that statement, but ill take it as any progress in the Right direction can only be considered a good thing, if Everybodies prepared to do the Right thing that is

Jimster, the other day an ACE within this thread asked "whats silmulpost".
If you could just look at F27584?thread="http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/" >http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/ is worth it?
My question is, if ACEs are expected to understand the workings of the site, to help newies out, then dont they need to pass a basic knowledge test of terms used on the site?
Could it be just offering to be an ACE has been 'good enough' of late?
Somebody in this thread refered to a test, and answers being copied?
Is there an ACE test at all? If so is it available for all to look at, or only upon application to be an ACE?
I'd really like a look at any such test, to gain a better understanding of what staff do really expect, at least in recent history. Can it be e-mailed to me please?

Look at the message centre of U190118 (as you could find out yourself if you looked at the ACE volunteer page threads).

SEF thanks (I think) for the link.
It offers more questions aout the quality of testing... Like allowing the debate over <./>MiscChat</.> mid test.
And for anybody that did not have a look...
Imagine a driving test, where you was allowed to stop, and get an expert in a particular part of the test to fill in for you.
Or the experts start having a 'chat' amongst themselfs as is in this case, so the tester just leaves.

"why would i be mad? you are expressing 'your' opinions, i was simply asking if they was 'your' opinions or that of a wannabee ace being 'pc'..everyone is 'allegedly' entitled to an opinion on this site provided it doesnt break the house rules, of course..i started this thread and ive always stated i wanted researchers/aces and indeed staff too, to post their views/opinions on this matter"
These are completely my own views and not those of me wanting to become an ACE....The reason I wanted to try to help is because of the simple reason that it's in my nature....it's how I am and how I will always be.
"careful how you word that, if it appears in anyway you could be agreeing here, though i suspect thats just the way you worded it and not your personal opinion, you too could be considered for potential 'strikeout' material"
I am agreeing with you - not everything is quite as it should be...but I wouldn't point the finger solely at the ACE's (or some of them). What I have seen on hootoo is other people acting completely inadequately on site....I've had my run ins with other researchers on here who are nothing but argumentative and are only on here to harrass other researchers. Perhaps it's because of these few researchers that the ACE's do as they do. Perhaps it is a case that the ACE's must follow certain researchers around - just to make sure they are acting properly. These researchers may just be under the line of being put on pre-mod, but not doing quite enough to justify being put on it.
I must admit that I have never ever had any cause to consider the ACE's as acting improper at any time - if I'm lucky then perhaps it's because I have been yikesed less than a hand full of times and I don't post unwanted or unneeded posts ( at least I think I don't).
"with all due respect how can you give a fair and unbiased opinion if you havent read Everything? clearly your experiences on h2g2 have been positive 1's, (which just go's to show there are some decent 'people' onsite), however, it makes what you are saying sound very much like the opinion of h2g2, said in previous threads, the aces are great, they are helpful and friendly, we like them but that was said without even considering if i or other researchers might actually have something here, though considering this is evidently not the 1st time this has happened it would appear h2g2 are wearing 'rose tinted spectacles', though saying all that it is also clear from links provided that perhaps the staff should also think about some of their previous posts online too"
Again - I haven't got the time to go through this entire list....I'm only on hootoo for a limited amount of time during the day (coz work are being really nasty about the use of internet ). The majority of people I talk to on site are decent people - I have a laugh and a joke with them, but they are also there when I've needed them. I've had a very bad year this year (hopefully next year will be better) and I would not have been able to cope with it all without my friends on hootoo. They are supportive and care very much. It's strange that people I have never met in the flesh could care so much. Hootoo is not just about researching - it's about making friends too. You don't judge quite as easily when you can't see their face. You learn someones personality and learn to care for them too. I have a couple of very close friends on here now whom I don't wish to lose.
"no argument there, as i said this has been happening long before my issues and so far it doesnt appear as though anything was done before either"
"you sure your name isnt Jim? lol"
*checks "bits"* I certainly hope not!!!!!!
"Vicky, i am not mad at you, not in the slightest, but read all the thread, so then you can get a clearer picture of whats going on, though saying that many posts, for no real good reason have been yikesed, thus distorting whats really going on, but at least then you would have a better understanding of all the issues raised"
OK - I still haven't the time to go through it all - although I do get the general flow of the thread and that some people aren't happy with hootoo.
"suggestion"
If you are worried about e-mails either not being looked at or being misplaced by whoever, what about starting up a guide entry stating all the things possibly wrong with hootoo.....marking each point individually.
Other people could then start their own conversations to add to this and as and when a point is agreed - it could be added to the guide....once completed this could be given to the italics for them to consider and then make suggestions of their own.
I would suggesting keeping the italics out of this guide, and to be presented to them when it is completed.....perhaps put a time limit of it of say - 2 months or something then after that time, only deal with the points that have been raised, argued and agreed on..
I do think this would be the easiest way to sort out any possible problems and is easier than having to negotiate this thread.....

Vicky Virago - or is it?
"these are completely my own views and not those of me wanting to be a ace"
"the reason i wanted to try to help is because of the simple reason its in my nature.....its how i am and how i always will be"
ok, i was just clarifying the matter, and you are helping, all views are welcome here
"i am agreeing with you - not everything is quite how it should be"
and that is the reason for the thread, to discuss, explain why and what should be done to put these 'things' right
"but i wouldnt point the finger SOLELY at aces (or some of them)".
no i completely agree, its not just some aces
"perhaps it is a case that the aces must follow certain researchers around"
i wasnt aware that was any part of their 'ace' description though? infact it clearly states in the rules that aces are not tied to activities on this site, or their role is a 9-5, they are able to come and go as they please and not expected to be an on duty 24hr working ace, so 'following certain researchers around', unless staff officially ordered it is something aces choose to do
"these researchers may just be under the line of being put on pre-mod, but not quite enough to justify being put on it"
whilst i understand this is a possible theory of yours, it could also be considered to be antagonizing an already 'perhaps' difficult or fragile situation and in doing so researchers may feel discriminated against! if an ace chooses to do this, as some have done, (for personal reasons), a researcher may/will, (depending on the individual), say something, and as a researchers word means nothing over an ace, the ace enevitibly gets praised for the victimization caused, the researcher is shown the door, or at least pointed in the direction of it, so Vicky im not sure your theory even with good intention is acceptable behaviour for an ace unless they have a damn good reason to do so!
"if you are worried about emails either not being looked at or being misplaced by whoever"
no im not worried, or even surprised, i think my exact words were 'how very convenient'
"what about starting up a guide entry stating all the things possibly wrong with hootoo.....marking each point individually"
see now i understand you say you are trying to help, but 1stly i cannot say onsite 'whos' done what specifically, that has already been made clear to me but 2ndly if i did list all my issues, though its complicated, not being able to detail everything, evidence being hidden etc, my whole guide entry would, lets face it, get yikesed so i choose to keep it here, open and with the opinions of everybody, that way you can only hide some of the posts rather than the whole lot
"i would suggest keeping the italics out of this guide"
absolutey totally disagree with you there im afraid, i want as much input from the italics as they are prepared to give, and i want everybody to be held accountable, no matter what their status on here, as its been pointed out to me on more than 1 occasion, if anyone has abused the rules of this site they will be held accountable, i want to visibly see that notion is put into practice as ive seen nothing yet thats suggests it has, only excuses made for the actions of friends/pals

Is 'Vicki Virago - Or is it?'
1. Really Odo?
2. Got Odo involved in some 'joke'?
3. A troll?
4. Genuine about not reading the backlog as stated above, and just has no idea of what is going on?

Kaz Posted Dec 18, 2003
I agree with that point Jab, I remember someone who had been on the site a week or two and volunteered to be an ace. They got it, even though they had no inkling of how the site worked.
Regarding The Aces Code Of Conduct
Vicki Virago - Proud Mother Posted Dec 18, 2003
Jab - Kaz - yes I volunteered to be an ACE - it appeared to be unsuccessful....as for Odo - she is a completely different person - if you bothered to have a look you would see that!
I don't appreciate the finger being pointed at me accusing me of god knows what - and don't start that "well we weren't going to, but seems how you bring it up" malarky - check your facts before hand!
IV
Right - on a more sober note - I understand your point about what you say....I can't think of anything right now which would possibly help to remedy the matter, except to say that if the italics agreed to what I proposed, then they couldn't really have anything moderationed (unless of course it broke house rules with language etc)
If I can think of anything to help move things along, I'll certainly do my best and let you know.
Until then - like I said to SEF earlier - good luck in your quest...
Again to Jab and Kaz - What's the matter - got something to hide?

Vicki Virago - Proud Mother Posted Dec 18, 2003
IV - I am sorry - I have tried to help - but CERTAIN individuals doubt by identity on hootoo.
We've been over what they "suggest", and as far as I can see, you believe me.
But with what has happened over the past year - I feel I can no longer help you.
Good luck in your quest because with other people butting in with non-commital comments, I feel you may never get what you wish, or need.
