Purple dye-making was a gross process involving crushing and steeping molluscs, I mentioned it briefly in my Phoenix constellation entry A37329834. There was a programme on how the ancients made purple, I think it was Tony Robinson (Baldrick) who presented it. Fascinating, I can't wait for your entry...

I think these are so short we can get away with the copyright. And they are extracts from a longer collection of poems. And I've seen both, often, in dictionaries of quotations.

I forget, now, who wrote them. Not Ogden Nash, I think. Some other guy.
