The reference to the poem Gnomon - it's title is "Warning" and is by Jenny Joseph.

It begins:
"When I am an old woman
I shall wear purple
With a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me"



It was written in 1961, and was voted Britain's favourite poem in 1996.

Just come back from a visit to Wales, where (to judge from reading a beer bottle label) the word for purple is Piws (right, Websailor?)

But puce is (by definition) the colour of a flea, which is not exactly purple . . . more reddish-brown (must be the clotted blood inside)

I'm still debating whether to put in things that just happen to be purple. I don't want it to end up like the "pink" entry, which in my opinion ended up as a list of a load of pink things.

Purple is what purple does, makes me feel sick, symbolises status and power in certain circles, is often associated with off beat cults etc but I still maintain is not prevalent in the natural world

Followed the link and Its Blue, checked else where and the only slightly purple one I found was a hand drawn

but the butterfly might think it's purple, hence it's name

Now your taking the “Mickey”, yes pretty birds ……but wait for it ………”Mainly Blue or Turquoise with just a splash of Purple.

Still have purple though!
